Red Hood: First Cosplay Build

ThreeEvening

Hey RPF! I'm ThreeEvening, or Ethan, and this'll be my first time creating my own cosplay. While I have a 3D-printed Halo Spartan build planned out, it's a little time-consuming and cost-prohibitive for a high schooler who doesn't have a job or very much free time at the moment. So, I'm putting that on hold until the summer and am currently planning a Red Hood cosplay! He's one of my favorite superhero and Batman characters, and the costume seems like something I could work on when I have only 30 extra minutes during the day.

Here's my reference (not sure of the artist):

And here's my plan:
EVA foam for the chest (template here)
3D printed helmet (probably going to use this file)
I have a perfect leather jacket already
Black tactical pants
Not sure where I'll find the holsters yet
3D printed weapons

I'm excited to try out building with foam, and I figured this might be a slightly easier first step into cosplay than a full 3D printed armor build. That'll still be coming, but this'll be something easier right now.

I also could theoretically do an "Under the Red Hood" version as well, I have a black jacket and the costume in the animated movie looks like he's wearing his gray shirt over armor, so I'd be able to switch out the two versions depending on what I'm feeling that day. I also might add a red hoodie beneath the jacket for a little extra flair, but I'm starting with the basics before I add anything else. Ordering the foam soon!

Hey Ethan! Welcome to the crazy world of cosplay. Red Hood is definitely a great beginner project. It sounds like you’ve got the project pretty well figured out already. With the holster design you could definitely make those out of EVA foam too.

Also the helmet file you found looks pretty good. I also found this one just so you have options.

I look forward to seeing your build!

Starting with Steve's (SKS Props) patterns for the chest armor is a great way to go. His templates/videos are excellent and I really like working with his line of HD Foam. For the holsters, the simple route is do also get drop thigh holsters off amazon. But if you want something that fits your props (or the props off thingiverse that are slightly larger than would fit in a standard holster) then going with foam like previously mentioned would work well

My 3D printer is having issues, but the college I go to has a free 3D printing service, and I just requested a helmet print from them. I'll be ordering the foam for the build soon as well!

Here's the base for the Under the Red Hood version, jacket is from Alpha Industries if anyone is wondering. The next two things are of course the chest armor and the helmet, but I'm also looking for some inexpensive tactical pants, a belt, holsters, and I need to get the dual pistols 3D printed. Extras would be a red hoodie, a domino mask, and maybe his Scorpion-style mask. So far so good!

The gloves and kneepads...

and the pants.

Does anyone know how to remove the Mechanix logo from the gloves? It's not a major thing, but it's something that I'd notice a lot. The helmet is printing at my college right now as well!

Been a bit since I posted, but my Robin mask and one holster are ready for painting and I got my hands on this really cool tactical belt. I'm hoping to get those painted this weekend, and the EVA foam for the chest armor should be arriving around the same time. I honestly have no idea where the helmet progress is at though, since the Makerspace people appear to have disappeared off the face of the earth.

Unfortunate update: I went to check out the helmet at the college, but it was too small for my head and the print is too thin to create the thing where the helmet is put on in parts, with magnets holding it together. This puts the brakes on the cosplay until I can get it reprinted, which definitely won't be ten days from now for SummerCon. I'm still planning on going in a cosplay, which will be The Legion from Dead by Daylight, and I'm going to keep working on the Red Hood, maybe getting that done for Rose City Comic Con. Depends on if I'm able to travel for that or not. It's disappointing, but I'm excited to have a good base to continue working on the cosplay.

I’m sorry the helmet didn’t work out for you. Those helmets can be really tricky with sizing and everything. I worked on a fan series for Red Hood a number of years ago, and sizing was always a struggle.

Anyways I hope you have a good time at the con. Like you said though you have a good base. Hopefully you can resolve the helmet snag soon!
