Star Wars movie set den build

Very awesome! excellent work!
It would be hard running this past my old lady though, LOL

Dmachinist, make a deal with your wife. Give her something she would like in exchange. My wife said I could build a Star Wars den as long as I did not knock any holes in the wall. She reminded me of my previous "cat-door-through-the-bedroom-wall" incident. I think that cat door turned out great, but she reminds me that the cat never once used the door between the living room and the bedroom. :facepalm I had to make it up to her by covering the cat door hole in the wall with this...

It's a home-made screen + electronics stand + overhead shelf. It was complete with Bass Shakers and subsonic transducers shaking the couch. However, I later moved the shakers into the Star Wars den and put them under the desk floor panels. She's in this home theater every night, enjoying the picture on the 112-inch (9-ft 4-inch) projector screen.

I like it!
Thanks. I like your B9 robot page.

excellent! Hey DJ - its been a few days since i was able to get out a stretch my legs! The room looking awesome! :)

Thanks for all the encouragement. Here is a new photo. It shows how the new spotlights have improved the depth of the walls. With the intensified shadows, all the detail seems to jump off the wall.

LOL, that's some coverup! I need one of those to cover some cracks in my livingroom wall!
Nice job!

Note: They moved my thread into a new category "Star Wars Costumes & Props". I almost couldn't find it. If you've subscribed, you will get notified I'm sure.

I am planning to construct some ceiling details to replicate a starship ceiling. This stuff will be hanging above my head from a suspended grid framework. Plastic or foam seems to be the lightest weight material. Once again, I use a vinyl gutter as a base.
attachment.php

Why did I pick a vinyl gutter? I can get a 10ft piece of this stuff for only $5.23 and it is much cheaper and lighter than wood. After the photo, I chopped these up.

Below, I have just used the gutter "corners". I liked the 45 degree angle of the edges, and I made some more 45 degree steps in it lengthwise as I cut it.
attachment.php

I have temporarily hung these Franken-gutter pieces up to check for scale. They are zip-tied to the grid. There will be a piece of Sintra in the center of those, a panel between the rails. That will hide the rope light. There will also be some lenses made out of white Acrylite, some little red lights, some little white lights. I also temporarily hung my round fan grille to see if it would be centered over the top of my computer chair. Everything on the ceiling is going to get painted a dark charcoal color. There will be a lot of box shapes up there, with horizontal tubes and random plumbing and wires.

Next time, let's cut up some Sintra (PVC board) and glue these gutter halves to the edges. The center section will be 21.5" wide and 10 feet long.

Such an amazing room! I would have a hard time leaving it LOL! You have done a fantastic job on it! I look forward to pics of the completed room.

Throwing you some secret plans...
attachment.php

Ignore the colors. Everything gets painted gray in the end. I have 5 shades of gray in this room.

* whitish gray
* primer gray
* dark gray
* primer gray mixed with stove black
* charcoal gray
and there's flat black

Now I gotta cut the Sintra for it. That's a PVC-like panel. Cuts better than wood and needs no sanding, has no grain.

Tonight I got some Sintra panels cut for the ceiling. Here, I have laid out these new black panels on some white 10-ft vinyl rails just to see what the greeblies might look like. None of them have been painted yet...
attachment.php

I might rearrange a few. In fact, I have to change the white vinyl rails so they're not upside-down before gluing everything together. :p

Next, I have to do these things...

* finish the edges of the panels
* make a big round hole for the fan
* cut some "light holes" and "light slots" in all panels
* cut some "light panels" to fill in between the black panel gaps
* paint the greeblies and panels gray and gray-er and gray-ish and black-ish gray
* glue the black panels to the rails
* hang that assembly from my ceiling grid rack thing

Then I will be filling in parts on the whole rest of the ceiling rack. Still looking for some 1-ft diameter tubes. Who has a suggestion?

I'm experimenting with placement of some detail pieces. Here, I've begun to glue on some pieces of white styrene plastic to give the panel some dimension. And I'm marking some holes, getting ready to cut a fan hole...
star-wars-movie-set-den-build-ceiling-21.jpg-255919d1384589827

the panels will basically glue to the vinyl rails and clamp down while the glue dries, like this...

The backs of these panels look weird because they have photos of doorknobs and door handles on them. I've recycled these panels from a place that had surplus store display panels. Every panel has door hardware photos on them, a vinyl sticker that peels off with some difficulty - and a warm hair dryer to soften the vinyl.

More construction. I decided to make the 2 panels above the desk be more Falcon-like. This is the "hatch" pattern seen several places in the Falcon cockpit.

I'm gluing styrene pieces to the black Sintra. Some detail pieces are clamped on while the glue sets.

I saw this several weeks ago, but lost track of it... This is just so much AWESOME!!! Nice work is an understatement!!!

:thumbsup

I finally figured out what to do with the "power couplers" I made. Here, 3 of them are fastened to the wall behind my Falcon computer desk...
attachment.php

Next, they get these rubber nubs made of recycled toilet seat rubber washers, a scrap of Liquatite conduit and a drywall screw...
attachment.php

And, voila, the power couplers can get some power from the pewter panels below...
attachment.php

Note, this is not a screen accurate piece. But in this room, I'm capturing the essence of things from the Star Wars sets. They had a lot of pipes, wires and hoses, and plumbing couplings sticking out of walls everywhere. My made-up power couplers are made of 3 recycled Plano toolbox lids. They are the part where the toolbox handle is supposed attach to. In a previous post, I did a video where I was chopping up the black plastic lids with a plunge cut tool. The gray tubes are a new dishwasher hose I found at a discount store for $6. The hoses simply press onto the rubber nubs you saw in the middle photo. That was fun!

I've had plans on doing something similar for a media room but the use of PVC pipes to amplify the light is genius, my way was more expensive. Also I love the wall treatment idea!

After many years in the military I am finally getting a house I will be able to stay in and can build this media room. Thank you for the inspiration and great ideas!!
