ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Yep. On the MerrSonn, it seems the area that the other grill was is either missing pain/glue residue and we are seeing the primer or resin underneath the black paint... but as you said, the areas look the same as if something was there.

On the Solo HERO that area definitely has some glue type residue as if something was glued there at some point.

I think it is interesting and telling that both the Solo Hero and the MerrSonn blasters have this same area residue.

As you say, the Disk area on the HERO looks very bright and is prob not the same issue but could be missing the imperial disk pulley.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I've also been looking at that Cantina shot I posted showing "the real Greedo Killer"

The best I can determine is that in that shot the blaster is in the same condition as the post production images with the one antenna and broken sight track so it seems the blaster was broken early on and they never bothered to fix it.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

In addition to the "glue" (marked left) take a look at the area I marked to the right.

I just noticed that there seems to be a nice dent in the recess of the upper receiver that is not on the preproduction image below.

I think Ford was a real butterfingers!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I think it looks that way because of the way I enhanced it. Look at the smaller image, looks like a dent to me , but isn't important, just thought it was interesting.

What do you think of the "glue residue" on the receiver rail?

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

here is a better image with an alternate view.

I think it shows that the "dent" is on the prop and not the scan.

Also, note the dented receiver on top next to the slide.

Definitely bent down and not straight like the pre production... and this is a steel gun!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

The "dent" on the left looks like part of the cutout on the receiver. The straight line curves slightly and continues straight but lower until coming to the deeper curve. It's not a dent, just part of the cutout and it is on the photo you've labeled straight.

The thing on the right looks like a wavy hairline scratch.

The other stuff does look like gunk on the receiver like something was glued there and came off.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks for the input!

I agree, the "dent" on the left above the "glue" could just be an exaggerated line caused by the glue.

The "scratch" on the right could be a scratch rather than a dent, but at least we know it's on the prop and not the pics since we see it in two different pics.

...So, has the "Glue" on the rail ever been discussed or noticed before?

Is that glue spot visible on this nice CU of the MerrSonn: It seems to be on the other versions of the MerrSonn.

What could have been glued on there?

Here is a slightly cleaner image of the glue area.

I know the gauntlet has been thrown down on the antennae issue but I stumbled upon this:
Radio Control Hall of Fame

Anybody live in Ohio?
The KGLs and KSEs look like they may be close matches but some macro photography is in order.

Nice find!

that could help solve the question.

I still question how or why they would have so many of these little toggles from these remote boxes. The antenna seem to have been used on a few different props, blasters, speeders etc. Did the remotes come with a bunch of extra replacement joysticks?

Come on Ohio RPF members, help solve the issue!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I dont think its a prob too much of a stretch that they could have cast them off original pieces like they did so many other found items they used (ie the coin slots). Theres also the possibility that they were sold in baggies as replacement parts as opposed to scavenged off existing pieces. We know Artoo was RC so they had to have RC controllers and prob extra parts laying around to fix the controllers.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Wow, that toggle switch is pretty darn similar.. Thanks guys for the photo and link!

I also agree that the antennas/toggles possibly could have been cast, and maybe even the grill pieces as well. I wish there was more reference or info to figure these things out better! I wonder if anyone knows who the original photographer was for that blueish background photo shoot?

Someone that worked on ANH probably remembers tons of stuff we'd all love to know about parts like these. But apparently none of those guys have ever seen this or any other replica forum for some reason. :lol

What could have been glued on there?

Yes the "glue" spot is on the full long barrel Merr Sonn as well. It looks like the same type of mark as the spot where the other radial cylinder half used to be (glue and missing paint).

I have no idea what could have been glued there.
Whatever it was, it broke off or was removed from all the Mausers. It seems like a pretty solid flat area - easy to glue to. The piece left a good solid missing spot of paint unlike the thinner outline of the hollow radial cylinder.

I don't think the antenna pieces were cast (too fragile). Most likely they just had a ton of them. I'm sure they acquired them in bulk like the turntable parts, instrument/amp knobs and other classic trilogy greeblie bits.
If they are remote toggles, they don't seem to match the type used on R2. R2's remote was a Futaba and I checked - it doesn't match. The other droids may have had different brand controls though.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks Chris!

Interesting about the Mauser based blasters all seeming to have that Glue residue.

Like you say, maybe they were designed with some detail there and either it didn't end up looking right or they broke off too easily and to keep some continuity of form, they took them all off.

Has this ever been discussed or noticed before?

Like I suggested before, maybe there was a greeblie that went from the Disk to the Glue Spot??

Are there any preproduction/production drawings of the blaster that may suggest this area detail? Maybe something from Ralph McQuarrie?

I agree about the Antenna not being cast. They do have that radial taper connecting the head to the shaft and it is too clean and even to be just clayed in on all the antenna including the Speeder and it doesn't seem practical that they would have extra parts like that unless they were really common and easy to get.

I keep thinking they were either parts from a model kit or a peg of some sort. Maybe a model cannon plunger ram?

And if you recall the Speeder shots, the Antenna don't seem to have the "rings" as such like the toggle and MerrSonn CU.

I know the Speeder has been on display from time to time. Is it at SW ranch or a museum where someone can check it out again??

So do we now have a Mystery Disk and a New Mystery Glue Spot??

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

There isn't really any concept art for the blasters (nothing that looks like the props anyway). The props were just built from what they had on hand.

The mystery glue spot does not seem to be related to the mystery disk. The glue spot is rectangular, not circular. The glue spot has not been discussed before as far as I know.

It's highly unlikely that the "antenna" is a model kit part. None of the UK built props used model kit parts until ESB when they started using the V-8 Engine. It's most likely surplus of some kind (aircraft, electronics, photographic, etc).

The landspeeder is currently on display with the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit. It's at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA until April 15th.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

great info! Thanks!

I always thought the ship/Death Star models were done in the UK too.

Maybe someone in CA can get over to the exhibit and snap a few HD pics of the antenna!

Love to find out if the rings are there or not and if you can tell what they are made of and how.

For the Glue spot, I thought maybe a tube went from the center of the Disk pulley to that spot, maybe the Laser sight , Coil Plug type thing on the MerrSonn was stuck on there.

Interesting to think about!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Don't you think this is it? It could have been cast up and drilled to fit some brass stock to make the 'antenna' longer? This looks pretty accurate to me? Or maybe they have a box full of just the switch tops?

And I'm wondering if that coiled 'sight' greeblie from the Merr Son was maybe glued in that glue spot area, and then maybe they switched it up, leaving that residue.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

That's what I was thinking about the coil sight thing too.

Is there a corresponding mark on the other side of the blasters? I tried to enhance the images i have but don't see anything there.

The toggle switch is a dead ringer (if the correct size) for the Merr Sonn Antenna detail which is commonly agreed as the design, but...
the Antenna shown on the Landspeeder pics do not seem to have the same grooved ring details.

That's a very small piece to take and drill and add rods to , (with the same radiused taper) all for a very insignificant (at the time) part. Like Chris said, I think it was most likely a common readily available part from something else. Looks like plastic to me.

Maybe if we think of the antenna as the look on the Landspeeder rather than the MerrSonn, we will be able to place it better. Looking for a head with ring grooves will only let us see things with ring grooves. Maybe keeping our eyes peeled for the Landspeeder shape will spark new results.

The Merr Sonn antenna is on the upper far right for comparison

In these , it seems the antenna actually have raised ribs. Maybe they were filed off for the MerrSonn to allow them to sit lower? Maybe filing the raised ribs off caused the grooves which could be "sink" marks.

Hard to tell it is...

The drawing I made is to show how it "may" appear.
