I was inspired by Galaxy’s Edge and The Outer Rim on YouTube to make some filler banners for my Halloween display.
I ordered 2 yards of coloured canvas for each banner I am going to do and cut them down accordingly. I figured starting with the proper base color would save me money on paint and time and easily offset the extra cost of just using a bland drop sheet.
I sewed up 2.25” hem at the top so I could insert a 1” electrical pipe for hanging. I also cut all of the weathering tears and holes in it and gave it a wash so all of the ends were tattered.
For the Jedi logo, I just eyeballed everything and used blue painters tape to mask off the outline. In hindsight I should probably have printed half of it full size on paper but it turned out good enough. I ended doing it in two stages due to the complexity of the design.
I stippled on cheap craft paint with a chip brush and once dry peeled all of the masking tape off. The weathering was a mixture of misting the tattered ends with brown and black spray paint, using thinned acrylics for small splatters and stains and a final misting of white to make it look a bit faded.
For the rebel insignia I had the fortune of being able to cut out a negative template on my new cnc (this was my first project with it).
I used this as a mask for the paint and tried a slightly different approach, I used some 3M super 77 spray adhesive to seal the canvas so it would bleed under the matte and sprayed the logo with white acrylic spray paint.
Overall I am happy with the results and have a few more to do.
