Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have there been?

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

I think you are confusing the Master with the Valeyard in this instance.

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Sorry dude but you've got a few details mixed up there:

1) an idea was tossed around between Pertwee, Letts and Dicks that the Master could be a future incarnation of the Doctor making the Sherlock Holmes/Moriarty angle even more twisted but the idea was dropped when Delgado died in a car accident.

2) the idea was picked up again as a plot twist during the 6th Doctor's time in the form of the Valyard (Scrap Yard, Knacker's Yard, Boat Yard, Ale Yard...) to add danger to the situation the Doctor found himself in. The Valyard and the Master are separate people and it's the Master that blows the Valyard's cover.

3) the laser screwdriver only appears in the new series because other than a weapon (mostly a laser gun at first but that evolved into the TCE) to menace people with Letts and Dicks set down the concept that the Master should retain the same level of mystery as the Doctor but also should be seen as a puller of strings and not a man who gets his hands dirty doing the work. It was why we never saw Delgado's incarnation without gloves on.

On a side note I was disappointed that they didn't continue the use of the TCE into the new series but I hope that when and if the Master makes yet another return to the show he'll finally be using a new version of it.

Here here!
I think the TCE is a very creepy, Love the idea of it,
The design is great too, Even though it is a litttle... dodgy looking :lol

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Since The War Games is out on dvd now, has anyone gotten it? If so, can we get some pics of the 2nd doctors penlite. Id like to find as close of a match as possible for my growing sonic collection

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

After reviewing the evidence and innaccuracies of the various sonics over the years, I recently commisioned TimeLords Pocket to make a version with measurements that has taken me five years and buying countless replicas to compile. In the end it came down to most sonics offered being too long, with halos and emitters that are too big and the base being flattened rather than domed, to name just a few things. This is the version of the Season 12 sonic that TLP put together based upon this:

If you want one, just drop TLP a line and tell him that Jonathan sent you.

I found this capture from The War Games in my image collection:

This is the best view of the Second Doctor's sonic.

Excellent work! I just acquired this very model from TLP this week!

Now I have the licensed Sixteen 12, three from Russ and one from TLP. Am I going overboard? :confused

If TLP doesn't mind, I will likely post some comparison photos soon. :)

This one is very slightly different from the version he has been selling. He only completed this prototype on Sunday. I will get some comparison pics up soon. Look forward to seeing yours too.

Asp9mm,
Does your new one from TLP have the extending emitter on it? When I looked at their website, I saw that they offer that version, but I could not tell if they all come that way or if you have to ask for it.
Thanks,
Tony

If you mean the 'Genesis' version with the antennae like extending halo, then no, it doesn't. They don't come as standard with that function. TLP does make them, and I'm in the process of working out the best way to make a locking open and closed version.

Yes, that is what I meant.
Thanks

How is the spring action for the new TLP vs the 16-12 and the Russ sonics?
Easy/looser or fairly tight?

As for the second Doctor sonic- here are the silver pen lights I have found and that I use as a stand in for that version of the sonic (in the post linked below). I hope this helps- if anyone finds anything better or identifies the original pen light Troughton use din the 60's, please let us know!

The Sixteen 12 is the easiest to operate. It can be easily worked using my thumb without straining.

Russ Replicas is more difficult. I find I can barely operate it with just my thumb due to both the stiff spring and the small diameter activator ring. Of course, this can be fixed by cutting or replacing the spring.

The TLP I just received is also fairly stiff, but the larger diameter activator ring makes it easier to work one handed than Russ'. The distance of travel is considerably shorter than either Russ' or Sixteen 12.

This is difficult to describe, but TLP's sonic has a slightly different design for the recessed part of the sleeve to prevent scratches. Here is a crude illustration:

This design also prevents the handle from 'catching' on the grooves of the sleeve during use. Perhaps Russ should consider incorporating something similar to this for his future sonics.

It's called electrical tape. Get about 2 inches of it and wrap it around beneath the rings and you're good to go. No contact with the outer handle and no more screeching metal sound.

Or teflon mouse tape. Nice n' smooth.

I was a bit disappointed, but then again I can understand it with this story. I really hope they bring back TCE the next time the Master appears. Delgado didn't always use the TCE.... He did use a laser gun. I like a laser screwdriver over a just a laser gun any day. Of course the LS was also about the Lazarus device built into it. I can't see it coming back after failing him in the long run.

Oh and I mainly was interested in seeing different versions of the sonic screwdriver as they appeared in the shows.
Shame "Fury Of The Deep" is missing... since it's the first appearance of the sonic screwdriver.

I wish we could get more pics of Troughton's pen light sonic screwdriver. War Games shows it, but just not enough.
I can't wait to get more Pertwee dvd's... Hopefully I will see some more different versions during his run. I know there is a less colorful one that he used. Don't get me wrong... I like the more colorful one, but I just want to see them all. I would love to get a count of the different versions. Especially the more different versions, rather than just small variations.
