Firefly "TallCard" cards

Hmm, is it just me or does that not look screen used? All the ones seen when they are actually playing cards have the black on them, that one looks brand new. I suppose it could have been one that was not used during filming.

I got my set of Tall cards this past weekend (BIG UPS to FETTCLONE), & they look great.

Anyone figured out how to go about weathering them to make them more screen-accurate?

Also, has it ever been decided what the 'Plum' cards were made from, or were they a found item?

i was thinking of putting one in a glass of coke and seeing what would happen, (cheers Fettclone for sourceing the sets)

Dan.

Bump for the people with the weathering info having missed my previous post. ;) :lol

P.S. All your thread are belong to me.

If you want to know what they look like, look no further than the actual thing:

I was just watching "Trash" and caught this scene with what looks like un-weathered cards...

Look like un-weathered cards to me

Think I'll be leaving some of my Fettclone card clean for these. :D

That's the new deck they bought when it was realized Jayne had "marked" the old one ;)

Good eye Chris. :thumbsup

Just finished this up:

The case isn't canon, but it turned out just the way I wanted it.

That's beautiful. Gets me all misty just lookin' at it...

Gotta ask, though. Do you know how to play? :D I know there have been some fan-made Tall Card rules floating around, but I've never seen a set of rules that plays by the zodiac cards.

And might I inquire as to your sources for these fine cards, both zodiac and tall?

Thanks dude.

No, I have NO idea how to play. I knew that some fans had invented rules, but I've never looked at actually trying to play the game. :p

As far as sources, the zodiac "amulet" cards were found by 'FETTCLONE' in post #53 in this thread, which he later offered in the JY. The picture cards were made by 'Whitefall'. You can see a lot of his shiny Firefly/Serenity replicas HERE. They are ALL top notch work. :thumbsup :thumbsup

Hmm...perhaps, with some help from the people at fireflyfans.net, we can come up with a set of rules that works with the zodiac cards, instead of plain poker cards. The downside, I guess, is that 12 cards is probably not enough to play any actual game with. Shame, really.

Yeah, I remember seeing the amulet cards for sale around here, but that was long before I was able to register...methinks I should see if FETTCLONE has any sets left.

And I've heard very good things about Whitefall's stuff in the past...only thing is, I'm not a big fan of the suits he chose. I rather like the sound of this set:

<div class='quotetop'></div>
Oh yes, as to suits.. a little web research says mahjong has the following for the "flower" suits in mahjong:

1. Plum ( méi) -- East
2. Orchid ( lán) -- South
3. Chrysanthemum ( jü') -- West
4. Bamboo ( zhú) -- North
[/b]

Of course, the problem with that is that I'd have to make my own stuff, and I'm not sure if I have the means to do that. Maybe I shouldn't be so picky...

Anyway. While I'm at it, might I inquire as to your weathering techniques?

First off, let me say what DIDN'T work.

I spray-painted them with flat black & rubbed them with fine steel wool (which is the way the screencards were done). Well, after the steel wool, I noticed the paint sort of peeling up around the edges. I grabbed one of the edges & pulled & all the paint came off in one big sheet. It looked like a black fruit roll-up with some Chinese art on one side. SO, I went ahead & "banana-peeled" all the paint off all the cards (in retrospect, I should've done a test run on one card first).

THEN, took some FolkArt® Opaque Outdoor acrylic paint (1640 - Licorice), & sponged it on until I couldn't really see any surface features. After they dried, I used a piece of WORN-OUT (<--!!!) 100 grit sandpaper, & lightly sanded in small circle patterns until I could see the details I wanted. I then took a damp/almost dry sheet of paper towel & wiped the cards down to get off any loose particles/dust. And finally, I took a dry paper towel & dry rubbed some generic acrylic brown paint over all the surfaces. I used a very small amount of brown (just enough to get a faint brown tint), & rubbed with the paper towel until there were no "brush-marks". It's such a light layer that if you look at the cards straight-on, you almost can't see it.

And that's it.

Very nicely done, Nexus. Consider me duly impressed. It's great to see the cards looking so good (bad?), but the whole package is fantastic. :thumbsup

I'm amazed at the detail-perfect reproductions I see here, but I'm truly impressed when someone makes something that wasn't seen on screen but looks like it should have been. Beautiful job, down to the weathering on the box.

Aren't you the webmaster of serenitystuff.com? If so, this is high praise coming from you, considering the company you keep (Mund, Mandel, etc.).

I'm honored.

P.S. If I've mistaken you for someone else, then plz disregard my e-groveling. :lol ;)
