Star Trek (2009 J.J. Abrams movie) Phaser Defined Thread!

Well, I did start the sentence with "In my opinion"

This is where the whole thing of stating opinion as fact comes to a head. There is a world of difference between saying, "Star Trek 17 SUCKED!" and saying "I think Star Trek 17 SUCKED!"

The first statement is stating an opinion as fact, and is insulting to those who may have liked the film.

The second is an expression of personal opinion only. Much more friendly.

LA Times: You know that no matter what you do, you’ll get an earful from hardcore fans.

JJ Abrams: The key is to appreciate that there are purists and fans of "Star Trek" who are going to be very vocal if they see things that aren’t what what they want. But I can’t make this movie for readers of Nacelles Monthly who are only concerned with what the ship’s engines look like.

The only possible use for using an entire mag of nothing but tracer would be to direct a fire fight and then only when your directions arent working and you need to 'point out' who or where it is you want your boys to lay the hurt on. Its old school and not used very often anymore (at least not in Baghdad). Its a techinique better used when your contact is a distance away and your trying to let everyone know where to concentrate fire. That sort of thing is more likely in Afghanistan then in an urban environment.
I know we never used it.
We also didnt color code our mags nor did I see a single other grunt over there with color coded mags. Our pulls were 550 cord with whatever tape (usually OD) was available.
Maybe non infantry units or training units use colored tape but I reiterate WE did not use this system so Im guessing it maybe a method used by non infantry types so they can access and track what they have. I typically carried six pouches each holding 3 mags of 30 rds each with every 3d rd being tracer. If I was on the 203 Id dump two mags so I could carry more 40mm. For a while there most folks in theater were required to carry a minimum combat load which was 210 rds (2 full pouches and a full mag in the weapon).

If it has not been covered, you are right. We DO use coloured tape to indicate types of rounds in a mag. For me, if it is red the whole clip is "tracer."

Not to hijack the thread but we did this and is it taught as a tactic in the USMC. I myself did the whole mag of tracer for just as you are saying, cut off or too much crap going down to communicate with my men effectively via voice or hand. The tape was for me. As you know, the fog of war you need all the help you can get sometimes even knowing where your own gear is. I also had the last three shots in every mag as tracer as a visual reference for me that it was time to get a new one.

I would totally read Nacelles Monthy... :)

Phase Pistol: You should print that out and cover a magazine, a la BTTF2. :thumbsup

Someone needs to comp up a Bettie Page-esque model (preferably in Orion Slave Girl mode) straddling one of those mighty nacelles.

I think I'd go for a copy if it had an article about the defiant, with like an exploded of the parts, or just a cutaway picture of them.

Is that MAG just for old school ships ?
