I know there is no "best" or alternative other than metallizing.
With that in mind & in these tough economic times....
what is a spray can alternative That can be purchased state side?

I'm thinking of re-doing my 3po, but I want at least a semi brilliant finish.:thumbsup

Plasti-cote? I found a youtube snipit of TK409's torso shot with it, looked good, but can one purchase said paint here in the states???

I've never tried it in gold, but the chrome spray really sold me.
It dried quickly, very reflective and withstood handling.
So you may want to look into Zynolyte - SUPER METAL GOLD
My local hardware store used to carry it, but lately I haven't seen them in stock.

but is it the same as the UK stuff? The stuff here in the states isn't as metally.
did you use it? how does it look? pix?
-Thanx!!

The plasticote i have tried in the Uk is hard work TBH , it takes ages to dry and if you touch it or leave it layed on something it will mark ! if sprayed gloss black first i found that a good finish could be achieved but is was not at all durable and best used on a static display item.
I did this padme blaster with the chrome plasticote and the gold just the same -

the best i have ever used is Krylon premium metallic, we cant get it anymore in the UK sadly but it dries real qiuck and has a great finish. Second to this is rustoleum , oth are available easily in the US.

Thanx for the info!!
Any pix of the Krylon premium metallic on what you shot?

Hola Ely, any pix?

Is Krylon premium metallic sort of like the semi flat black (one of the discontinued cans) or can it be purchased wherever? I've been looking for a good metallic paint, not really chrome, just something that believably looks like lightly polished aluminum. I'm really not a fan of the "metallic" sprays that are more like grey with glitter mixed in.

My sister-in-law does gold-leafing for a living. It's really not that difficult (although 30 years of practice does make it look easier than it would be for a beginner). Applying a thin layer of actual metal to your prop might be an option to look at.

Gold leaf... isn't that kinda frail? If you are gonna do some appliance rather than paint, you might as well go with metal foil, but it's just difficult to use for anything curved and with lots of surface detail.

The Plasticote 'Brilliant' Metallic Gold here in the UK, as far as I remember, has never been available stateside.

As already mentioned above, the results are good, but drying time is a nightmare... although the can states 2 hrs, it has been known to take weeks !!

Well, here is my contribution to the conversation. I had this recommended to me some while ago but never got around to ordering it to try it out, not in a rattle can I don't think but hey, I'm a little tired of rattle cans NEVER producing the chrome I want. I don't know if it's available in Gold or not:

Gold leaf is no frailer than rattle-can paint; you'd want to coat it with a clear gloss lacquer in any case. It is essentially thin metal foil; thin enough to conform to irregular and detailed shapes. There are metal leafs in silvery and coppery colors as well.

And seriously, if you're doing a C-3PO, you don't want even the best rattle-can paint. It will still look like what it is. Leafing or vac-metalizing are the way to go.

Check out Montana Gold Chrome. I used it to paint an Indiana Jones idol bank. It came out looking pretty sweet, but I must admit it was not easy to handle afterwards. I think the rubber material of the bank made it easier to leave fingerprints. I also tried Rust-Oleum Advanced Formula Metallic Pure Gold but it looked very flat.
