Buzz Lightyear

I'd really like to do this next year for Halloween. With the new movie coming out in June or July I think it would be a great funny costume.

BUT... I'm going to need some help... heck not even "some" ALOT of help. I did some searching on the internet and came across some picture of what I would like my costume to look like and trust me it's nothing like the ones that are available for retail. I would like to make mine as cool as possible with all the lights and sound effects, if possible the helmet that opens and closes along with the wings in the back that open with a push of a button. I'd also like to do all the phrases and have speakers on the suit that play the phrases when someone presses the buttons on my chest. Here are the pictures, from what I understand they are from a musical that Disney put together.

So I need IDEAS lets start helping me break this down. I've got about a year to do it but I'll need your help everyone.

I've been kicking around the idea of making this costume one of these days as well...looks like the one you've posted is all fabric covered foam.

Good luck, I am sure someone here will be able to help. That will be one great costume to have for sure:thumbsup

Never seen that version of the costume before, looks great and would be awesome if you do it!

Thats a much softer version of the park edition. The park edition Buzz looks like a combo of vac form and fiberglass for the suit. Looks like a gigantic/human-size version of the toy.

Hit flickr and type in Buzz Lightyear and you will see what I mean. I have started bits a pieces and have quite a bit of the suit diagramming and plans done. When I have time in the future I may pick it up again.

well at least the costume in that musical seems quite practical. the legs are quite free to move and you're not fully encased in fibreglass etc.

I am pretty sure Buzz's gloves are Oakley. I have a pair just like them, but they are black... I *think* they make them in tan and white. Just FYI

I know that's why I want to do this version. And my face fits nicely with the character I get told all the time I look like a live version of either Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Incredible, or the Dad from American Dad.

well...what are your talents?

The one you showed here pretty much looks like all foam. Which is easily do-able, but if you're into fiberglassing and/or vacu-forming you may want to go that route instead. I think the moveability is really nice with the foam suit, however for looks I'd say go with fiberglass or ABS vacu-formed plastic.

I'm not certain how you would be able to make the bubble go up and down, without seeing this costume do it, I would have to imagine they have different tops rather than having the lid actually open and close.

For the noises you'd probably just have to pick up a Buzz Lightyear toy that has the phrases, crack it open, attach a different button and probably a bigger speaker. You may want to add a pre-amp to boost it. And if you don't know any electronics, that'll be tough.

so...good luck! heh

Id be excited to see the foam version pulled off with that quality of the disney suit. Love to see what you do.

The disney suit that I've seen (much like the Boston Legal one) is really inaccurate. This Foam one isn't necessarily more accurate, but is designed better (no balls just attached to the shoulder and elbows.)

I had a dream of one day making a suit as well, so I'll be watching with anticipation!

That is awesome.

I had an idea for doing a slightly realistic style Buzz, after figuring that the cartoon proportions could never be fully accomplished. I did a sketch based around off-white coveralls. A little more classlic astronaut inspired.

I'll try to dig it up.
