Tron Legacy Costume

I want those gloves, any chance you are making more of them to sell? or have a video to show how you did it?

Well, i'm sorry to dissapoint, we wanted to make them with el-wire but we sort of ran out of time and money...so the Rinzler gloves are just regular spandex gloves with glowsticks attached with electrical tape! ^^U. Looks great in the dark tho =P

TRON LEGACY: Movie Replica RINZLER or TRON - Motorcycle Suits.
Be ready to choose...but choose wisely......:ninja

Form molded leather, silicone hexagon print...your choice of RINZLER or TRON reflective color detailing.

More to come!

David

Wow, that is amazing! will it light up or is it reflective?

Also, what a great ref pic for the chest piece! too bad mine is already finished xD

hi guys i lurk around and wait for cool movies to come along and i give a try at a prop and then never finish it so here goes i actually got most of the work done to my own characters torso and arms if i were on the grid (the back story to my troniverse character: imagine if tron and flynn had both escaped clu and tron didnt become rinzler well that alot of imagining but hey ho if clu still needed a right hand man instead of rinzler then that would be me however i will be showing my face instead of wearing a helmet because my full time occupation of the troniverse would be GLADIATORIAL CHAMPION :) ) i have yet to lightit up my el wire should be in the post as of tomorrow so when it comes through i will start right away and have it litten up in no time

Srsly? it's soo crappy and easy. Here's a simple scheme for the gloves. I added one for the thumb, since I just realize that from watching the screencaps e_e. It goes over a simple black glove, 6 orange glowsticks for both hands and electrical tape. This is really far from what it is on the movies, Rinzer gloves look more like goalkeeper gloves painted all black with details in EL wire. My idea looks acceptable only in dark pictures xD.

The tape goes all around the hand and fingers.

@Thefutureisnow. Is that cardboard or foam? I ask because one of the greatest pains for my Tron costumes was how to make it look good when sitting or bending. I don't know how your character looks, but you shoud consider cut away the middle part of the armour so you could move more freely.

@ Luniwe: Just wanted to say, your costume looks amazing!

@ thefutureisnow: I agree with Luni on this, if that's cardboard or even foam you might have issues sitting down or bending, and wiring it up may become an issue too. Do you, by any chance, happen to have a picture/drawing of your OC (original character) and if so, post? Maybe we can help you work out a way to make your armor easier to move around in, plus maybe make it a little more form-fitting, and/or even improve the design of the OC. I happen to do anime-esque Tron-themed art/characters/custom stuff and take relatively cheap orders on Gaia Online for virtual gold (no real money necessary!) see my deviantART

Anyway so. I'm fixing up my prom dress/costume and preparing it for use at ElecTRONica and Anime Expo (don't ask me how Tron relates to anime - it doesn't xDD) I finally managed to borrow a decent camera and took pics of it on my mannequin (should have probably taken pictures of the back but now my little brother has taken my disc hostage and I've given the camera back)

The goal now for the convention/ElecTRONica is to modify the existing outfit so it looks "cleaner", more "movie accurate" I guess - obviously without destroying the look - so I may be relying you guys for advice much more heavily this time through the process if I do decide to rework the outfit.

OTL, note that I am far more savvy with a sewing machine than with wires/soldering guns, and hell I don't even have a soldering gun, so I'm afraid that any technical mods - upgrading disc, switching inverter/battery pack, cutting wires - may be out of the question for me unless I can find someone who can do it for me on the cheap.

Questions/Opinions/Advice? (refer to pictures below):

1. Diffusion lighting system: So because of the potential clunkiness of using foam/thick pieces and/or duct tape (and possibly looking more like "costume/cosplay" than a legitimate prom dress, even though it doesn't look quite as amazing as the other one I saw in the thread), I ended up sewing the EL wires on the edges of the reflective tape to "diffuse" the light. This did not work quite as well as the others who successfully hid the wires and got them to reflect onto the surface of the tape (by using what I remember/assume is foam and something to reflect the light back into the tape)?

So, uh, TL;DR question is - should I attempt to rewire/redo the lights so the wires aren't visible, and if so, is there a way to do it while still retaining the sleek, shiny-smooth look of the cloth I used consistent (crepe satin), perhaps avoiding duct tape? Also, I still have a canister of 100 blue glow bracelets - should I use them to light up the gloves/leggings/boots, or leave as is?

2. Far more simple than the first question - the floor length section of the skirt - Remove/cut off and then add a zipper so it can be zipped back on, or leave it the way it is? Would it look better if it was more true to the actual outfit, or if I let it be unique/stick there? I guess more of an opinion/poll than a serious NEED TO KNOW question.

3. Any way at all to do a disc mod without extensive use of a soldering gun/iron? It doesn't have to be TOTALLY bright, but just brighter or even just having the existing lights stay on would be awesome. I might be able to borrow a heat/soldering gun from a friend or art teacher but yeah - I've only used one for jewelry-making aaand... that's it. I otherwise don't know the first thing about rewiring anything.

4. As the hexagon fabric is far too expensive to me at the moment - has anyone ever attempted to do their own hexagon patterns, perhaps with some sort of custom-cut rubber stamp with fabric paint, or stencil with spraypaint? If so, what brand/type of fabric paint/technique would you suggest?

5. ISO marking - not part of the dress itself, but has anyone attempted to use glow paint on their skin to make Quorra's ISO mark or other body circuitry (like Radia or other Alpha-class ISOs)? What's the best/brightest paint, or would you recommend something else (as I happen to have glow-in-the-dark turquoise nail polish but I'm terrified to see what happens when I paint that on my skin)

thanks for all the advice guys its cardboard but i might put a foam layer over the top with another layer of see through sticky back vinyl to give i a nice sheen or maybe if someone has a better way of shining it up a bit from foamies that'd be great and yeah ill probs cut a waist line for the torso to make movement easier thanks for the tips guys andheres a pic of my original character

Its a good start thefutureisnow I like the design of you character. Just getting started on mine I wanted to go with a combo of the original and new tron. I was going to use the cooper helmet and the jc racing chest but paint them black. Hopefully is wont look too stupid just wanted to try somthing new.

Here's another good tip from the School of Trial and Error:
If you are working with Split-electrode EL Tape (Specifically some second-rate crap from GlowHut) and you do a 90-degree turn fold like you see here:

http://www.luminousfilm.com/tech/fabrication-sheet-se-.pdf

And you want to try and flatten the folded area (since it has such stiff backing material), DO NOT USE A STAPLER. Under any circumstances.

Yes, it's nice and flat now, but when I plugged in the inverter, the damned thing shorted out on me. The staple must have connected the two circuits. So now I've got a very expensive piece of non-working EL Tape with a nice, flat 90-degree fold. Not what I wanted.

So avoid that.
And also avoid having a few beers while working with EL Tape.

This has been a public service announcement.

okay guys im not sure if this has been discused yet but ive had an epiphany : how about for the chest armor plates because im having trouble coming up with an attachtment method to keep everything skin tight i have scrapped every thin but the back plates with disc holder and gonna make a duct tape dummie vest and then just cut straight up the back and have velcro this way i can mold the plates to myself without having to wear them at the same time and itl make putting the suit on/off 10 times easier what'dya think ? :D

Hard to answer all this stuff together, let's see how it goes

@thefutureisnow: I did all the EVA foam molding over myself, it's hell not having a mannequin, but my boyfriend's was 1000000000000 times simpler because of well.... not having to shape any boobs, lol. With my armor when sitting and bending, the armour bent in this really ugly curve on my belly that sort of made me an overweight Quorra. The EVA foam and the wiring took all the movement very well, but that was the only real problem.

What I thought of doing to repair it was to glue or sew some corset boning (the plastic ones should do) at the back, it will be restricting, but it might stay in place. Also, I know it's not very TRONesque, but you can sew elastic bands attached to the sides and put on the armour like a T-shirt, thay way and with a bit of luck you'll have a tight fitting and non moving armour made of foam. Yay.

@MVKiU: First of all, thanks <3

What the other users did was putting a layer of shower curtain or white vinyl over the strips from what I remember reading. I went with masking tape and in the dark the difussion went better that expected, although I used a single wire in the middle and you can see the bump created on the tape when the lights are off... very cosplay-looking. Still the idea of putting something over the wire stands. A nice white fabric or vinyl over the strips should do the trick!

The Quorra's ISO mark is not ment to be seen anyway, thats what I thought out of lazyness xD, maybe you shoud try the paint on your skin and see if it's really worth it.

For the disk, I have no idea about the modding, but there was a thread somewhere around here with all kinds of mods, including a total mod and just a lights on mod and a lot of other cool stuff!. If you plan on having the disc on your back the whole time, my idea might help, you can just open the disc and put your own layer of EL wire and hide your battery on the disc holder on your back. That was how they did it in the movie (from what I understood from watching a making-of), I suppose they had 2 different kinds of disc, ones for fighting and other ones ment for wearing.

so luniwe would you say this would work : instead of duct tape maniquin how about making up full scale templates of all my armor pieces first in thin paper like a sewing pattern so to speak(or type ;) ) and coating them with sticky back vinyl or duct tape then just assembling them in a way with velcro fastenings and that way they can be kept skin tight because of the flimsyness but with the vinyl coating they would still be relatively strong :D

I dunno, it feels like you are making a shirt out of paper. Not sure how it can actually fit. But, checking again your design how about you go find, make or commision a tight vest out of eco-leather or neoprene or another matte fabric that may look like the rubberish thing used on the film with a zipper on the front and then sew or glue the orange strips , disc holder and details and finnaly do the wire work. That would be a lot better-looking (and easier to wear)!
