3D Printed TFA: First Order Storm Trooper Bucket

Hello there!
I have been 3D modeling and 3D printing for a while now, but this will be my first experience in building a prop with a 3D printer. And what better way to start than with a new stormtrooper in time for the movie?

I got the pepakura files from http://www.4shared.com/zip/UmcAzHP-ba/Stormtrooper_Armour_Complete_b.html? (all credit goes to fisherk). Here are the earliest stages of my build:

I will continue to post updates as I go. Next step is slicing in netfabb and sizing for printing! :)

So after a ton of printing, taping and gluing, it is finally together. I am about to start the Bondo stage to fill in all the cracks and smooth out the low poly design. I'm a little lost on the visor, though. Where would a good place to get a smoked tint visor be? Thanks! 2495ff92-fa28-40e3-aa34-3825dd5e8c65.jpg20151122_033928.jpg20151122_034005.jpg20151124_003614-1-1.png

Looks great so far! What kind of printer did you use? I made a crap helmet for Halloween, and I used a couple roll-up sunglasses for the visor (the ones they give you after you get your eyes dialated at the eye doctor). They're pretty cheap online, and they actually worked out great. The only issue is that they roll out flat, so if you want to get that convex curve on them, you'd have to figure out something, maybe like a heat gun to warp them or something.

Thanks! I used a MakerBot 5th Gen Replicator for most of the printing, and an Ultimaker 2 for some smaller pieces. I'll check those sunglasses out, however I am not overly concerned with price, so I might go for something else!

Hey dude, impressive...most impressive. Looks like a nice clean print with good detail. You're gonna have a mountain of bondo-ing to get that baby smooth though.

Not sure if I wanna tackle the new order helmet...maybe when I've seen the film

Yeah, that helmet is going to weigh a ton and take forever after all the spot-filler that will need to be used. Not to be rude, but why bother 3D printing something so low-poly?

Thank you very much! And I guess it is due time to finish updating this thread. I have finished work on the helmet. It is far from perfect, but it was a good first run. Here is a photo of the completed bucket:

And here is a photo from the premiere at my local movie theater compared to the Anovos suit:

Before Episode VIII I plan to 3D print or pep out an entire suit, and I will redo the helmet by that time and make it much more accurate.
