A New Star Wars Trilogy Announced

I for one am very excited, and I cannot wait to see what Kathleen Kennedy does next with Star Wars. Her achievements have been so impressive and she has done such a great job with this franchise I cannot imagine why they would ever even think of letting her go. Her list of well received products since taking over Lucasfilm continues to amaze. With all the amazing success it's blue skies and sunshine ahead.

With the fan love for the sequel series, and all these fantastic TV series you just can't help but wonder what's the hold up. Why so long without new movies. More Rey movies. More awesome TV series. They have all been so well received no wonder this woman still has a job.

Let's not forget the greatest Indiana Jones film of all time. It's so great I can't even bring myself to watch it and I'm as big an Indiana Jones fan as there is. I just don't think I can take the greatness of Dial of Destiny. More than anything I wanted Indiana Jones to be old, miserable, split up from Marion, and bullied around by an obnoxious, snotty, smarmy, brat. And Kathleen delivered.

Long live Kathleen and all her accomplishments.

In my opinion...let me preface that...it's an opinion for all those that think i speak matter of factly too much...that the PT couldn't ever be good or exciting because the OT sealed the story and most had individual ideas in their heads about what led up to Luke in the original Star Wars.
I feel much of the poor execution of the PT is what is the issue. It lingered on the wrong things and cheapened the characters by failing to write them properly. The overall ideas and progression had promise and it could have been heartbreaking to see the good man Anakin fight and fail to stop Palpatine... but instead they showed him as this quitter, who didn't even fight when facing Palpatine. There was no sense of being up against an overpowering force, feeling Anakin's resolve being tested and bested and eventually broken. He just gave up. We should have seen his goodness. We should have seen the jealousy from the other Jedi. His constant struggles to keep going even when all semed to go against him. We didn't get anything other than the constant - look, this kid is Vader, see how Vader he is before he becomes Vader. That's not tragic, that's not sad. That's just plain dumb writing. It got boring pretty quickly. You never felt there was a fall, because he was already fallen.

It's the same when movies show evil character's backstories making them evil back then, even by how they look and speak and you look at all the characters around them and can only think that they are utterly blind and stupid to not notice. It's boring and lazy.

great points...agreed

It also cheapens Luke's confrontation. It would have been cool to see Anakin keep fighting and fail compared to Luke stopping to fight and win. Would have made that more impactful.

Oh, god. Milking that money cow.......again. I can only guess what story they come up with this time. Let me take a shot at it............a lonely teen eat up with teen angst, with a father he never knew, that really was a "bad guy" that killed a lot of "good guys" because he violated the code of his "lodge" and fell in love with a politician, and married her in violation of his "lodge's" code of "honor", and she got preggers, and when she died in childbirth, "dad" got angry and went on a rager, attacking his best friend. The best friend then whooped his ass and cut off some body parts, which made "angry dad" have to wear life support equipment for the rest of his life, only to be "saved' when his long, lost son showed up to "redeem" him as he lay dying, while his unknown teen daughter's buddies blew up his really cool planet-killing superfort. AND THEN Disney wants you to buy their merch advertising that! Did I get it right?

Everyone loves to blame Kathleen Kennedy, and maybe she doesn’t help fix the problems, but it’s silly to blame her when many other Disney movie houses are having the same issues and she has nothing to do with them.

The problems are higher up.

The same could have been for the PT if Lucas had realized he's better as the idea guy and let others handle the story and directing like in ESB - I don't really count RotJ, because from what I've read he was a lot more hands on with that one than ESB.
Lucas is a bit more self-aware than we give him credit for. He hit up three top directors to direct PT including Spielberg and Ron Howard. They turned him down because Star Wars was his "baby" and they didnt want him backseat directing which is what Lucas wanted to do. Lucas is pretty self-aware in that he isnt a great director and isnt great at dialogue, hence why he treats dialogue as "background music" and is pretty memey. Ford called him out on the dialogue in OT.

Agree somewhat. In terms of movie quality, all of Hollywood has been quite bad. There are few good movies coming out and it does feel like writers have forgotten how to deliver a compelling story to entertain the audience as opposed to lecture. This isnt just a Kennedy thing.

However, it is definately Kennedy who is failing to consistently deliver projects after annoucing them. The fact that a good majority of responses to this thread is "I'll believe it when I see it" shows clear mismanagement by a leader who has failed to deliver time and time again. The fact that is 70:30 that this "new trilogy" likely doesnt see the light of day is a testament to Kennedy's "management."

Only one addition to this, I don't believe the writers forgot how to write, they were fired or left. I see far too much "Director AS Writer" going on. When you write your own script and then direct or produce it, wonderful... BUT, if you are the Director of a reboot/sequel/prequel/spin-off, YOU SHOULD BE WRITING NOTHING. Only writers associated with the previous production should be in charge of the team writing the new one. Disney and most of Hollywood have cleaned house and filled it with new writers. The new writers suck, yes, but the idea of allowing JJ or KK (insert your favorite non writer here) to write or be the final say on writing for projects they are either directing or producing is bizarre. To let them do so on projects they have openly disavowed interest in or have openly stated their dislike of or disgreement with? That is sabotage.

I know that you were being sarcastic, but I still threw up in my mouth.

Well...I guess Kathleen Kennedy is at it again...apparently, pulled these two guys out of the wreckage to be the new writers. (For those that don't know...I'm joking)

The ST is just the same story as the OT, so if they took GL's orginal outline for his ST and just transfer it to Rey instead of Luke it may have a chance. Only if they beg him to help design it also. I also doubt this rumor though GL is 80 what does he care anymore.

People forget GL's real super power is his ability to get the best designs out of his art team and produce iconic looking characters that will sell product and last test of time. Maybe they finally figured it out.
