"All wings report in." My Red 1-6 X-Wing Project

A couple years ago I decided to build the 6 major red squadron x-wings to display in my Star Wars room. I have collected a ton of photos, quietly stalked many of the studio scale topics on the RPF, and went about collecting model kits for each ship. When I started this project the Bandai kits did not exist, so I was using the Revell 1:48 (ish, god knows scale) snap kits. Long story short that didn't work out all that well. I got through 3 of the ships, I was not happy with kit itself or my work on them, but I did learn a lot along the way. I was going to give up on the dream... then 1:72 Bandai happened!

So for almost a year I have been back at it. I have Red 6 through 3 finished, Red 1 is on the bench currently. The overall goal is to copy ILM whenever possible but I have taken artistic license to fill in missing reference or if I just felt like changing a color.

First for laughs I will post the failed Revell versions, I will then follow up with a new post for each of the finished wings.

Early color maps, I made many changes to these for the final builds. Locations mostly correct but color choices changed a great deal:

Bandai by ship coming next.

Those look great to me! I also like the stands you made, and looking forward to the Bandai kits.

Looking forward to seeing the rest

Those Revell kits actually look pretty decent. One part that bugs me is the heat sinks on the lasers though. They were just painted on instead of molded in

Awesome!

I'll be starting a studio scale x-wing soon, and I plan on painting it as Red 6. This thread is helpful!

Standing by!

Brilliant Ozzman,....a great resource for X-Wing builders everywhere

....great painting also,.....how many have you got now?

Awesome work here my friend......

I am currently painting my Hasbro X-wing Red 5 and finding the correct paint scheme seems to be a nightmare. There seems to be so many differences between scale models, set models, movie stills, etc. I've just decided to do my take on it and hopefully it turns out.

Thanks for the post !

Thanks for the positive comments everyone! Jaitea, I have four of the six finished. Pcoz, yes there is a crazy amount of variations from film to film and differences in each scale they made for the movies, in reference to red 5. My red 5 (and the rest) is based on ANH reference only.

Next up Red 4, a good bit of artistic liberty here. I changed the astro droid from what was used in the film, I liked the idea of a yellow R2 unit. Also the gray engine band is a nod to the pyro red 4 that was only red and gray.

Last of the finished x-wings is Red 3.

Ever notice that stumpy engine in the bandai box? That is red 3's upper starboard engine. Also, red 3's upper engines are in the opposite configuration compared to red 5. Meaning you should have the engine with the rib running front to back on the starboard side, not the port side as it is on Luke's ride. Since the landing gear side of the kit has the detail in the correct location for a Biggs build, I simply flipped the wings upside down, easy.

I noticed in looking at my reference for the red markings that Red 3's markings are set one panel farther inboard than all the other red birds.

On the bench now is Red Leader, and then Red Two of course. I will add to this topic with progress as it happens.

Excellent painting and weathering! Are you using an airbrush or hand painting?

Love the vibrant colors.

Also just want to throw this out there as a lover of R4 droids...the cone head isn't unreasonable to sculpt at 1/72 :)

Damn it. You're making me want some Bandai X-Wings now. They look great. Those colour charts look equally great too. Do they come in a larger size?

Junk Pilot, click on the image and download the original size from my flicker. Didn't make them any larger than that, they were mostly for my planning stage, I didn't use them while I was working on the kits.

Thanks everyone for taking a look and the great comments! More soon.

That looks fabulous! A great source of inspiration. I guess I have never seen all Reds together. I'm looking forward to seeing some HUUUUGE group shots! :)
