ALPS md5000 printer - having a new problem

Just a question for anyone still using an ALPS md5000
Mine started doing something recently...
In the print setup screen I select the Vphoto film so I can get the 2400 dpi for my waterslide decals.
It prints the colors properly but when it comes to do the glossy finish it will start to make the first pass but the cartridge will only lay down about 1/2" of coat then it freezes and makes a high pitched hum for a second then an error message appears that says the print job could not be completed because the ink cartridge is broken.

There is nothing wrong with the cartridge as it works fine when I print with the setting on 'laser paper' and run the decal film through.
I even put in old and new cartridges but get the same error.

The error even happens when I use the Vphoto setting but run an actual piece of laser paper so its not defective decal paper.

I am presuming I have a new glitch which is being caused by choosing "Vphoto film" for the paper but I just wanted to toss it out in case someone else has run into this.

While I'm at it, any users ever come up with a solution to driving the printer on Windows 10?
I still keep an old PC running Windows '95 strictly for using the ALPS.

Thanks

I may have solved my own problem so will post it in case someone does run into this issue.

1.) Print the needed images on your waterslide paper with the paper setting of "Vphoto film" but be sure to disable the glossy finish.
Also be sure to check the "overlay" box so the paper does not eject from the printer when done.

2.) After the 2400dpi image is done and the printer is waiting for the overlay information:
Change the paper setting to "laser paper"
Choose "spot colors"
Choose "single ink"
Choose "Glossy Finish"

Print.

This will print your images using only the glossy finish which will now properly coat your 2400dpi images without the error.

This post got me looking into it a little...
Now real question.... Are there alternatives to this printer? Surely this cant be the ONLY printer to be able to do the job? There must be others?
Im interested to know because frankly.... I want one. But the price these second hand refurbished printers seem to go for is insane.... not to mention the ever decreasing amount of "ink" available as its no longer made.

For the white ink its my understanding only Alps and I believe some OKI models but from what I have seen they are much more costly than the Alps. I think the reason is that for the masses white ink is not a priority because the vast majority of people are printing on white media so no need for white ink.

Have you guys seen these white toners for some laser printers? ghost-white-toner.com
I saw those here a few months back but could not find a compatible printer that was available locally. I need to replace my old inkjet, but having one that was compatible if i ever decided to get white, however unlikely, would have been a nice option.
