Another WWII Captain America Bucky rescue costume... but for a female*

*Not a sexy version.

Captain America is one of my girlfriends favorite superheroes and really wants to cosplay as the WWII version of him. I used to do a lot of WWII reenacting so most of the stuff I had already.

I scoured testors paints referencing back and forth to screenshots from the movie to find the closest blue for the helmet. Painted that, obviously, and then stenciled the A on. This is a bit of a budget build because I've been working on my Judge Dredd which as most of you know, is EXPENSIVE. I didn't want to buy the B7 AN6530 goggles, they're $150++ for reproduction goggles alone. I had some German flight goggles laying around that looked the part except the lenses were orange.
I used a Dr. Pepper 2 liter bottle, traced the orange lenses onto it, cut it out, and put them into the goggles and they fit perfectly. The foam around the lenses needs a little more clean up work that I haven't gotten around to yet.

Next up is to tackle the shield. I found this affordable shield that would be a perfect base for his WWII version, all it needs is some cutting. Here's the link if anyone wants to do the same: Medieval Crafted Knights Red Cross Crusader Shield
Here was a progress picture of all the cutting/grinding. I eyed the shape of his shield and made it just a tad smaller since otherwise it would look huge on her.

The handle and strap it comes with are complete rubbish and don't even fit the damn thing. I modified them, made my own little bracket for the forearm strap and welded them on.

I was almost done painting the shield itself yesterday but didn't like how a few things turned out... which means getting it all off and starting completely over. Which pains me TO NO END.

The other stuff I'm still working on. I'm trying to get all of this done for her by this weekend because there is a B-17 that just landed in town. She definitely wants to take the opportunity to put the costume on and get some pictures with it.

The jacket has been the most expensive part, I found this one one ebay: First Avenger Captain America Cowhide Vintage Biker Leather Jacket Chris Evans | eBay
I talked to the guy and asked if he could create a completely custom one to fit a female. It turned out great, I don't have pictures of it yet, I'm working on slowly weathering it at the moment. I'll update this shortly with more progress.

Wow, this is off to a great start. Hope that you can make it in time to have a photo with the B-17.
Thanks! I'm hoping so too. I just had her suit up to see what all that is left to do so far. Pretty much the only thing left to do is to repaint the shield. One of the leggings isn't on because the string broke while I was lacing it up. Let's all have a moment of silence for that 70 year old piece of string.

The pants are just a $10 pair from Sears with paratrooper pockets and reinforced knees sewn on. The color of the webbing is a bit wonky because of using my phone as a camera.

Everything looks great together. The modified pants are impressive and I have done the same thing with laces. Modern repos aren't much better.

Great ingenuity, really inspiring! And you have the costume done months in advance before Halloween, leaving the summer to leisure lol. Fantastic work, thanks for sharing!

I was having so much trouble with the shield, and we are off to see the planes today... which meant I had to pull an all nighter with this thing. Paint is done, just have to get some forearm straps made for it! Added a thin leather backing to it to hide the welds and make it look fancier.

Osmethae, I bought a similar jacket on ebay, it was shipped from Pakistan. Looks like real leather, but does not smell like real leather - I'm hoping mine isn't vinyl. Going to take it to a local luggage repair guy to shorten the wrist straps and see if it's leather or not. How did yours turn out?

This one came from Pakistan as well, and it's really not bad for the price. The color is decent, it appears to be real leather, a tad too dark in my opinion but it works great for a budget.

Edit: Sorry was in a hurry and skimmed your post. It doesn't quite smell like it's leather despite all the tags that say it is. It weathers like real leather though. And yeah, the wrist straps are REALLY long.

I finally got around to taking a real picture of the shield yesterday so more of the details show up.

No prob. I'd bet a dollar that all of the similar ebay jackets in the $140 range are coming out of a shop (or collective) from a city in Pakistan. Glad to hear that yours wears like leather. The very tip (maybe 1/32" square) of one of the collars arrived worn through to a white material. Hoping it's not "bonded leather", I touched it up with some brown Kiwi polish.

I'm taking my jacket to Mexico City in August for Epic Con, and will have the wrist straps shortened while I'm down there. Planning to use one of the cut strap pieces to make the collar strap. There's a leather shop in downtown Distrio Federal that restored my original A2 jacket (girl at the counter asked me "why do you want to fix it, it's so old" lol) - they'll be able to tell me what the material really is, and make me a duplicate in something heavy if I'm really interested.

Side note to capcicle86 - I spray painted my M1 helmet with Valspar Satin Indigo Streamer #85029, purchased at Lowe's. Found that from another rpf member, it looks excellent.
