Captain Jack Harkness - Torchwood

This was the first cosplay that I ever attempted and it was for Armageddon in Adelaide, South Australia last year (2011). I managed to get all the bits and pieces together in around 2 weeks which was a pretty decent effort I thought, but that also means that it isn't exactly "screen accurate", not that I really mind to be honest I like it how it is :D.

The coat is a WWII era German greatcoat, not a proper WWII RAF coat, but it's a very similar coat and at short notice it was the best I could do as finding a British RAF coat ended up being nigh on impossible at that point in time. Ended up costing me $60 from Perth, Western Australia and for that price at short notice I was really happy with it :D. The military rank slides I had to get separate and attach and they didn't arrive until AFTER the first con, so some pics have the slides and some don't depending on what con they were taken at :p. (Note that Jack isn't actually a Captain in the Army sense, he is a "Group Captain", so if you're looking for the slides search for that.)

White Bonds brand 'muscle top' underneath a basic blue business shirt I got from Harris Scarfe, basic black suspenders I got from Myer and a pair of (very slight) pin stripe black pants from Kmart. Plain brown belt from Big W and on that belt is a toy Webley holster and toy Webley revolver, which I spray painted black, from an Indiana Jones toy set. (Yes I am aware that the Indy Webley and the Jack Webley are different models but I'm not too fussed as long as it looks pretty much right :p)

I know his boots are meant to be brown but at the time I was strapped for cash and so I used a spare pair of black steel cap boots from work, but I think they actually make the outfit look quite good so I stuck with them ;).

I made up an el'cheapo basic Vortex Manipulator out of scrap brown leather and a small metal tin and put a cardboard panel inside lol. I'm planning on redoing this at some point given my increased knowledge of prop building etc that I have now. But it did what it needed to. Oh, and just a plain black bluetooth headset which, again, I'm planning on upgrading at some point to a replica of the proper one.

i have raf coat from 1952 its really heavy and very warm... also jack coat was made for him by the costume department as he has a few problems with wool ..or so read somewhere ..also the real coat will not flap about like jacks its quite a rigid material and besides your coat looked great.

Thanks guys :D Although I've cosplayed a few other things since this first one (which I will eventually upload threads for as well lol) this is probably the one I'm most happy with and it's my 'go to' costume :). Thanks for the kind words.

@shuktuki - Yeah, I have read the same thing and I knew that his coat wasn't an exact replica of a RAF greatcoat but one that was modded in different material due to some alergy or another that John Barrowman has. To be honest the main thing I was worried about at the time was getting a coat that was about the right colour and this one fit the bill fairly nicely!

Funny story actually. I walked into Armageddon and literally within the first 30 seconds one of the female volunteers came screaming up to me from somewhere on my left and proposed marriage LOL! My then girlfriend (now fiancee) who was standing next to me was more bemused than anything :p

And at a convertion early this year a girl wandered up to me, handed me a note and then scurried away, the note read: "You, me, on top of an invisible spaceship tied to Big Ben - R" LOL!

Lol yeah it's definitely a good "Love Gathering" cosplay :p Do you have a thread with pics of your costume around Bootlegger?

Nah. Haven't done one yet. I only have a couple of pics I like (not happy with how I photograph, among other things) of me from the con.

Thanks Zen :) I just did Jack again on the weekend during Avcon here in Adelaide, South Australia, and enjoyed every minute of it ;)

You look great... loving the bluetooth ear piece I need to get me one of those for mine... here's a few of my J. Harkness... always goes down well... (pun intended)
