Firefly Pistol Display

While waiting for my upcoming eye surgery in September, I decided to finish
up on an idea I'd had about displaying my resin Firefly "Browncoat Pistol." I
purchased a wood/glass display case from Southern Star Wood Display Cases,
in Tennesee.

It arrived quickly, but UPS crushed the container it was in, smashing the
glass, which then cut up the foam, fabric and wood. Another is on the way.

Meanwhile, I went to the local fabric shop and bought some one and two
inch foam and a yard of red felt. Using my exacto knife, I carved a pair of
cutouts in the foam; one for the pistol, one for an old leather holster that
my dad gave me when I was a kid.

I then glued the layer of foam with the cutouts onto the other layer of foam
that I had purchased. Then I carefully glued the felt on top, so that there
were as few wrinkles in the fabric around the cutouts as I could manage.

Here are the results, waiting to be dropped into the the case when it arrives.
(the third photo shows the barrel insert I made for the pistol).

You could always go to a local frame or glass shop and have a piece of poster glass cut to fit. If its a standard size, even an off the shelf picture frame could be utilized for the glass.

The cases are "made to order," one at a time, when they are ordered. I think
the idea of the customer having to repair a brand new case before it's even
unpacked from it's shipping crate is a little repugnant to them.

Because when I asked them what they wanted to do; have me replace the glass,
send me a replacement top with the glass installed, and they picked the one I
hadn't suggested: replace the whole thing with a whole new case.

So I guess that's the way we'll go. If UPS does another number on the
replacement display case, then I'll probably replace the glass myself. :)

I received the replacement display case today. I looks fantastic. The wood on
the case is cedar and the box has locking brass latches and brass hinges.
Workmanship is top notch.

In this photo, I played with the contrast to get rid of the reflection/glare of
the glass, so you can see the gun and holster better.

Very nice looking display!

I'll be doing something similar with my 1860 Colt and holster for a Cowboys & Aliens display, though I'm not sure I want to do a shadow box. Great look though!

Been working away on my Firefly pistol display case. I added a One Cred facsimile note I found in
the paper props section and then started working on a Mal bust figure for the upper right corner of the display.

Here are the results:

Next photo is a picture of the figure. The face isn't quite right, but it's as close as I can get it.
