Foam materials thread - store, price, density, etc

What do you guys think about this foam? I live in Japan and EVA foam like the one you all guys get is hard to come by. I think I just have to order it online but I did find this. I have not tested it out yet but I will shortly once I hook my printer up.

I was thinking of starting a similar "materials thread" and decided to look around first. Glad I did.

No idea how dead this thread is, but just my two cents.

Darice Foamies Foam Roll 36''x60'' White & foam & foamies at Joann.com
Amazon.com: Darice Foam Roll 36"x60"-White: Home & Kitchen

This is 2mm EVA foam by Darice, which comes in a 36''x60'' roll. At the time of writing Amazon has it on sale for $5.07 and Joann's has it listed for sale on their site for $4.79, though the store I visited had it on sale for full price. Good thing I brought a coupon, which brought it back down to around the $5 range. :3

I do recommend finding it in store though, saves money on shipping. Just call ahead of time to see if they even have it in stock; had this happen to me too many times, I had to get it out there. :x

If you are interested in the Darice foam roll from JoAnn and don't have any locally, here is a coupon code to use online for a flat $2.95 shipping rate for any number of rolls. I just used the code so I know it works.

The bad news is it only valid through Sunday, May 26, 2013.

I was just doing research for materials for a friend for an Attack on Titan 3DMG and I came back across this thread, and while looking for stuff I found that apparently there's a Japanese equivalent to EVA foam known as Lion Board, which is popular among cosplayers in Japan. Check it out?

Found out about it from this album that came up on my newsfeed, and the linked website in the album:

As for the foam roll photo you linked, I'm not super sure about the exact material, but I've only seen that used in LARP swords for padding. I would check out Lion Board first. That is, if you're still looking after an entire year :x

Edit: Seems someone has used that sort of blue camping mat for cosplay/props:

Still not super sure that it's specifically EVA foam, but whatever foam it is it seems to work.

This thread is a really good idea :) Especially for peeling back the mystery and getting to the nitty gritty :)

NZ in store retailers:

I found some foam mats at 2Cheap Lynn Mall. Pastel colours as it's a child's play area. $NZ24 for four squares. Not cheap but not bad. Good rigid but very light and sandable. I haven't yet cut or shaped it but it does appear to be the most commonly recommended density and thickness recommended as a base.
I understand Bunnings also stocks anti-fatigue foam mats, but you are very lucky if you find a store where they know what you are after...

Para Rubber sheets but again you are lucky if you find a rigid light foam.

The Warehouse has camping mats that are very soft and flexible- probably better for lining a light and rigid shell than to build from- it easily warps with pressure.

Too cheap also has A4 sheets of self adhesive EVA, about 1mm thick. The stick is actually better than I thought but is also @NZ2/m

I think the best way to find the stuff is to ask for anti-fatigue foam mats. When I ask for EVZ foam I get "looks" when I ask for foam bedding I tend to get pointed to mattress covers (which are great for building muscle suits etc!)

I HIT GOLD!!!!!! Again for Auckland, NZ in person :)

The Warehouse at May Rd shops (the new block that has sprung up around the New World- which is awesome and rivals Nosh btw ;) ) had a wide range of foams today :) So I took photos and will post them here with explanations of them all:

In the craft section they again have sheets of very thin A4 sized foam for $5.99 for 10. Also $1.99 foer A4 sheet of sticky back foam (which is very handy for very clean cuts and fine detail and to avoid glue overspills etc. Barely 1mm thick these sheets. All colours.

In the Sports section there were Yoga mats:

GREEN!!! that's the cheapie stuff, and will be used for pattern/disposable parts. Smooth one side, tiny grid on the other. Super light but quite brittle in feel. Will not last over time. But $NZ5 a roll.
The black mats above are actual rubber, so good for soles of shoes but not really for shaping. Can't remember the texture.
The packaged rolls in pink are also not really good for shaping and then there are more anti-slip rolls towards the right.

In the camping section they have more foam matts just like the yoga mats but they also have two kinds of "jigsaw" type foam mats. 6 panels in each and $NZ50 for each (60cmX60cm). They both have the fine texture grip on one side and smooth on the other. But one kind has 2cmD holes all across each board so is pretty useless.

These are the squishy foam mats in both sections. Probably good for patterning and lining or if you have a real need for squishy armour. Smooth both sides.
