Garron Paduk, Gears of War: Judgment

I built my Garron Paduk costume for Dragon Con 2013. It is 99% made of EVA foam and thin sheets fun foam from Hobby Lobby. All the "leather" you see (pouches, straps, etc) is also EVA foam. The photos from Dragon Con were taken by others, but I've credited the photographers in the file names.

I used the XNALara file to extract the geometry from the in-game model. Then I isolated each piece of armor in 3D Studio Max and exported it so I could then unwrap the model in Pepakura Designer. Taking that file, I used Adobe Illustrator to generate patterns for all the foam pieces. There are a few bits of sheet PVC and sheet styrene, but everything else you see is foam. For painting, I used "Foam Coat" that I got from Matt Silva. It's a mixture that seals the EVA and helps the Plastidip adhere to the foam, and also keeps the plastidip from wrinkling with flex/use. After plastidip, I used acrylic paints from Hobby Lobby for the main colors and washes. The stencils are Testors Enamel paints.

I also had a lighter/simpler version of the costume that I dubbed the party uniform. It was the Garron Paduk belt, chest armor and a lancer. The GoWJ black pants & shirt were replaced with Multicam pants & combat shirt. I also went with desert combat boots instead of the large game correct boots. You can see my custom made 26th Royal Tyran Infantry shoulder patch and Crossed Lancers & Skull patch on the hat. I actually had one lady ask me if I was wearing a Pendulum Wars uniform, which is basically what I was going for.

The two AWESOME Marriott carpet camo uniforms in the first photo were made by Volpin Props and God Save the Queen Fashions. The other costumers in the second photo are some of the cast from Beat Down Boogie's Mario Warfare YouTube series.

Thanks! I LOVE what you're doing too! If you do have any questions about how I did anything, please ask away! I love giving back to the community!

Really impressive eva foam skills! I think I saw you in person at D*Con in an elevator carrying your gear + multiple guns, was admiring the detail.

I've started a page on my website to detail how Robin & I have made our EVA armor for our Marcus Fenix, Anya Stroud, Bernie Mataki, and Garron Paduk builds. As we all know, ask 10 costumers how to make something & you'll get 10 different answers. I'm sure there are other ways, and probably many of them are better, but this is how we've done ours! :)

Dude, such a clean fantastic build. Wish i could get my Theron suit stateside, seems that all the best cogs are there.
SufferTheLocust, I wish you could come over too! Dragon*Con seems to have the most Gears of any con I've heard about! There are members of the "26th RTI - The Unvanquished" on Facebook in Europe, so I think y'all are having more & more Gears there too!

Thanks dashy! Hope to see you at Dragon*Con 2014 too! Say hi if you see us! I'd love to see your costumes too! (Were you there when we were loading/unloading? We brought WAY TOO MANY weapons! We had 3 lancers, a Longshot, Boltok, and a Locust Cleaver in the gun cabinet! We're not bringing near as many weapons next year!)

Wow!! Totally incredible detail and build. This site has the most amazing artisans!! So glad I found you guys!! You sir, are an inspiration!! Thank you for the post!

Robin & I are getting ready for a Bernie Mataki and Garron Paduk photoshoot in a couple weeks. I've got to do some repairs/adjustments to the armor from the wear it got at Dragon*Con. I'll also be adding the two grenades that Garron has on the left side of his belt. That's the big thing that the costume has been missing.

I've got a Makerbot Replicator 5th Gen on order! (wahoo!) I've 3D modeled the grenade based on the in game model and high poly renders that I've got.

This pic shows the in game and high poly on the left, my 3D model in the center, and the in game model on the right. The grenade is two piece for printing. The fuse assembly will fit into the grenade body after printing.

Later I'll make 3D models of the strap adjustment buckles that go on the two knee pad straps. I didn't make those in time for Dragon*Con 2013 for two reasons... 1) I ran out of time, and 2) I knew I wouldn't be happy with the fabrication using foam & sheet styrene. I'm REALLY looking forward to 3D printing them!

Your builds and Facebook page were a big inspiration to me when I did my Gears costumes last year (thread here), particularly when I was trying to sort out the back of the armor. The site looks great... I only wish it was around eight months ago! :)

I've just posted links to PDFs of the template files I created for this build. They're in the templates section of my costuming webpage. They are sized for someone 6'3" with a 48" chest & 40" waist (38" jeans). Hopefully they can help someone else with a build.

Wow, what great locations for Gears pics! It makes the costumes look even better, seeing how they blend so well into a natural setting.
