Guardians of the Galaxy: Star-Lord's Uniform (Fabric ID'ing)

The Prop Lord

Hey guys! I've been doing a bit of picture "research" and I'm working on.... *Que Dramatic "Dun, dun, Duuun"*

A Star-Lord costume.

From what I can tell, he wears 3 jackets in the movie.
-Trench Coat
-"Solo" jacket
-Team Uniform

Since it's probably the last thing he wears in the film, I figured I would go for the "Team" look. By team, it seems the members in this movie, by at least the end, all have the same "look."

There are very few reference pics, but here is what I've gathered:

Basically, I need help figuring out what material is used for the jacket, and pants.

I'm not sold on it being leather. I dont see the grooves and lines that real and faux leather have. Then again... I dont want to rule that out. See that it has quite a few wrinkles in the joints? The leather, and faux leather that I have worked with, does not flow/drape like that.

What do you guys think it could be?

Thanks!!!

I have to say, I really doubt that the "Team Uniform" version is leather, faux or otherwise, at least not fully. Parts of it (like the shoulders) definitely are, but the rest looks more like a normal cloth. I just can't look at that quilted forearm in the cockpit shot and see it as leather. I think the picture where it does have more of that look is more a matter of the way they've played with lighting. contrast, and color saturation. I took a couple screencaps from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgHeRCHkrwo&list=PLK5HARgNfgj9Nzu9sVTzFzn1aPMm7aGlu&index=15

In this first one, though it's a bit blurry, you can see a definite non leather texture on the arm. that looks like the front of Drax's pants, which you can see as he puts his knives into their sheaths. You can also see the same material in parts of Gamora's red outfit. Then again, the sleeve looks really different in this shot compared to the part where you see Star Lord from the front a split second later, so maybe it's actually the arm of one of the background characters you see in similar red Jumpsuits in the next picture. :p

In the second picture here, I think you can definitely tell from the sleeve and shoulder that there are several different materials in this uniform and not all of them are leather.

I'm not really sure if any of that is helpful or totally accurate, but that's at least how it looks to me. Regardless, I can't wait to see what you come up with! I haven't seen anybody working on this version yet!

I found a fabric that I will make due with. It's not the right color, exactly, but the material seems to be pretty darn close. I will post pics of it when I can.

It's a polyester, spandex, rayon, mix. It has a small amount stretch, has a slight sheen to it and when it is lit in similar conditions as these pictures, it looks very convincing. The only difference is the color and it is not distressed.

I believe it will do nicely.

I think this is what it is: Sew Classics Bengaline Suiting at Joann.com

Biking Red. Obviously it isnt the same color, but it "could" be dyed if need be.

I stumbled upon a similar picture that Kevin posted, but at a much higher quality. You should be able to zoom in quite a bit.

Here's the link if the thumbnail doesnt work:

It seems that the fabric used for most of the suit, had a circular mesh pattern printed onto it. How exactly it was done, I dont know. But that's what it looks like.

You can see the detail stitches and the panels of leather here and there. Suffice to say, I am extremely excited because now I can start on the pattern! I do not know if I will be able to accurately redraw the pattern on the computer (Adobe Illustrator) to fit other people.

Keep in mind that this is a promotional picture, meaning it may or may not be what is shown in the final productions. The guns for instance, have a few minor differences in their design.

In this shot, the mesh appears to be shiny/reflective, whereas in other shots, such as the closeup of the arm, it is definitely not shiny.

The pic I posted is actually higher resolution than that one, but it looks like photobucket compressed it. The pattern looks more like a woven carbon fiber than a circular pattern printed on

I think you are correct! I wonder how they accomplished this, other than having the material custom woven.

I have looked around and the only thing I found was upholstery vinyl that had a carbon fiber pattern. The image was too small so see.

I'm pretty sure it's a mix of heavy fabrics and leather. The "carbon fiber"
Area is probably just hand or machine stamped like his plain short jacket.

Very helpful, Oliver!

I wish I had that pic before I bought the material, haha.

So, that pic pretty much ID's the texture, which in turn, ID's the material. It looks like a heavy polyester material of some sort. I actually got some dark green fabric that was similar to this, but I cannot remember the exact name or mix of the material.

Now, does anyone know a "base pattern" that this can be built off of? I'd say it's a flight jacket, of sorts, but cannot find a matching pattern. I found one for the Arrow costume Im working on, but not this.

Any ideas?

Another image that may/may not help. Although it's extremely dirty, more reference images never hurt.

12 days left until the premier. I had better get cracking... I wish I could find a pic of his back (Team Uniform)

Has anyone spotted one yet?

So, I've pretty much completed my jacket and pants. I'll post pics in the morning.

I havent gone to the movie yet because Im going with 30+ people costumed people tomorrow.

I dont know what the back looks like and I missed a few details overall. But I think it looks DARN good for my first legit sew build.

I've sewn before, like, "morph suit" kind of stuff, but this has given me more experience and I have learned a lot from it.

Fantastic!! Hope to see them!

I had a short in my Star Lord eyes... been working on it for 3 hours :facepalm

Havent had time to post pics of my stuff yet because of it.

It's actually the Ravagers uniform. And everything was custom made for the film, not off the rack
