How to paint polypropylene?

Hi

I've got a question about painting parts made from PP

What method did you use?

sanding an then use a special primer for plastics?

Heating it by using a torch?


I tried normal primer on raw pp, it can be scrubbed of easily using my thumbnail...

I'd take a mould, cast the piece in resin or fibreglass, and paint that. Less pain.

Some folk here will have done it successfully though, no doubt. A bit of Googling shows that it can be done.

Valspar Plastic Primer says specifically it is Suitable for
PVC, polypropylene and casting resin. just scuff sand the item (maybe 600 to 800 grit to give it a bit of tooth) then apply2 coats 5 to 10 minutes apart and wait an hour before painting. polypropylene is hard stuff so even with this I would say it would be easily scratched... but then so is aluminum!

I've sanded it with 240 (only got a package of 40 - 80 - 120 - 240 ) and applied one coat of "Auto K Kunststoff Haftvermittler", a Plastic Primer.

Now I wait until it dryes an then will try to glue some PS-Parts on an go to prime it...

I'm trying an automotive product for flexible plastics: Dupli-Color Vinyl and Fabric paint. So far, mixed results. I think it's a lacquer; it seems to work well as a primer under enamel.
