I've been wanting to make a prop from the HTTYD universe for quite some time and my will to do this resurfaced when I stumbled upon a working CAD model of Toothless' Tail Fin on a Reddit post. I contacted the owner of the file and he was happy to share it with me.
I will probably modify the CAD model a bit, add some extra detail pieces and have some of the components, for example, the rods be actual metal rods instead of 3d printing them.

The second image is the auto tail. This is where Hiccup doesn't have to control the tail and Toothless can work it all on his own. Basically, the left side mimics what the other side is doing and the CAD model works with this mechanic in mind.
I love the look of the auto tail with all the bits and bobs and gears, although I think I'll go for the red fabric with the skull (image 1), it just makes me think TOOTHLESS when I look at it, and hopefully, guests will recognise it too when they see it mounted on my wall.
