Iron Man electronics setup question

First off, I wanted to thank everyone for contributing to such a great board. I've been here reading and learning for months and have loved every minute of it! I tried very hard to not ask any questions since it seems like everything is already answered on here but I've hit a major wall and can't seem to figure it out.

I'm building an iron man hand/forearm, arc reactor, and helmet. I plan to use reed switches to active the hand repulsor light and open/close the helmet.

I can't figure out how to wire and code it correctly. I've read the posts on here by 7sinz and others as well as visited the arduino site and youtube but I can't figure out how to get these things to work together on my arduino uno. Whether its the wiring or the coding, I don't know. I think the major block is how to use a reed switch instead of a button. I've tried replacing one for the other and it doesn't work. I also don't know how to have multiple inputs devices each signaling different reactions.

- 1 reed switch will trigger the repulsor light to fade on(while near a magnet), then (when I move the magnet away) to fade off.

- a different reed switch (not sure where to hide this one) would be used to move the face plate up and down.

I apologize for the large question, but I really am at my wits end with Halloween fast approaching. Thanks for all the help you've given me from months before I even got to this point. You guys rule!

The reed switch for the repulsor is not a bad idea and has been used before, but I'm just wondering why you want to use a reed switch for the helmet mechanism? Wouldn't it be just as easy to wire in an on/off button or switch for that? Sorry I'm not much help with it comes to using arduino's or other high end electronic tech, most of my wiring for my suits has been pretty simplified to date with no moving parts, just pretty lights. I hope someone else around here has an idea as to how to sort out your issues. Good luck!
