KOTOR Mandalorian Neo Crusader Build

Hello again RPF'ers!
I am back with another project! I hope nobody is getting tired of me yet. Anyway, I didn't get the chance to go to Star Wars Celebration Six last year. Nor did I get the chance to go to Celebration Europe this year. I did however attend Celebration five a few years back and it was a life changing experience! I'm sure everybody here knows that Celebration Seven will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California from April 16th to the 19th. Tickets go on sale august 7th at 7:00 PM. I plan on attending and I want to have a completely unique costume. I like building kits that are unique and haven't been done before. I have searched and searched and have found only TWO people who have build Mandalorian Neo Crusader armor from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. My goal is to have the third and best kit and done it for Celebration Seven!!!!! Aaaaaaannnd..... REFERENCE PICS!!!

I am choosing the Blue armor set because of the rank it represents. As a WWII reenactor representing an officer or high ranking official is seen as pompous and and generally frowned upon by serious reenactors. To be accurate we represent the grunt infantrymen on the front lines. To do the same with this kit I have chosen the blue color scheme because it is the lowest rank in the Mandalorian structure. Blue represents recruits, Crimson represents Rally Masters, and Gold Represents Field Marshals.
This will be my third costume build here and it is one that I plan on taking ALOT of time and effort to construct. I have two years before Celebration and I plan on taking that time to construct a great costume that is not only high quality but as screen accurate, and functional as I can make it.

I hope that this project can gain me some recognition from the veterans here. I don't merely wish to build for the fun of it. That is a huge part but I wish to gain experience and skills above all. I wish to reach the levels of the great masters of out group. If any of the more experienced builders here have any tips I would greatly appreciate them. Wish me luck!!! Ill have some progress updates by the end of the week (hopefully).

That could be very cool. I haven't seen anyone do this one yet. I'm wondering how the helmet will work out because I always thought they looked too small to fit a real head in.

Looking forward to this one!!! Very interesting....

Lots of ideas and ambition, growing skills...
Learning the ropes and trying to apply things as I learn...

Thanks! I'm going to give it my best shot. As for the helmet, the misconception is that it is a helmet. It actually isn't. It is a faceplate with a cowl or head toque covering the head and neck. that is why it looks disproportionate. Both guys who I have seen build these costumes made it all one hard piece, which isn't only impractical because you cant move your head it also ends up looking too big. This kit will require a lot of fabric work, which I am hoping I don't screw up too bad at...

Alrighty, here is my first progress update.
Recently I was contacted by a friend of mine who is on the Tumblr video game committee in preparation for their first convention, Dash Con, set for next year. I, along with many others, have been asked to build props from popular video games to auction off to help fund the convention. So to complete this task and also practice for my crusader build I have decided to make a set of four Mandalorian Neo Crusader face plates. One to represent each color (rank) of the most standardized period of Mandalorian history. I made a fourth child sized helmet as well.

Behold the pics!!!

All four masks have already been pepped and have had resin applied. Two of the larger masks and the child mask have been fiber glassed. After I fiber glass the final mask I shall begin the bondo. I am hoping to have them painted This weekend since I need them done for the auction on the eleventh.

You can find out more about Dash Con here: DashCon

I almost forgot!!! I want to thank Fierfek for his Star Wars pep file development. I was able to use his files for the mask, but I will not be using his pep files for the armor. I will be doing those from scratch. You can view that amazing thread here: http://www.therpf.com/f24/fierfeks-star-wars-pepakura-file-development-122071/

One last note.... This is my very first time trying the resin/bondo method of building. If at any point somebody sees something that I am doing wrong or have any tips that might make this easier please let me know!!!!!!
Stay tuned!

Ah yeah, that's what I thought.

It doesn't look like a helmet, but I thought it would have a round cap underneath with a cowl on top.

Anyway, I'm looking forward for you to finishing this build! :D

Transmission incoming..... UPDATE!

The masks have been semi-successfully Bondoed, and putty.... fillered. After I sanded them down they looked pretty good. Not perfect, but good. They had a few imperfections but for my very first Pep-Resin-Bondo build ever I think I did pretty well. The only setback I had was when one of the masks decided to kill itself. It broke itself right in half right where the top of the visor meets the bottom of the faceplate.... May he rest in peace.

Anyway, Knowing now that after I cut the visor out those two spots are very fragile. I built up extra Bondo on the other masks to prevent them from killing themselves as well. Next time I will have to be sure to use extra fiberglass in those areas. I would build another mask but the Dash Con auction begins tomorrow and I want to finish these tonight. I just started painting and they have just been primed. Stay tuned!!! There will be another update following within the next few hours!!!

great selection of costume :)
love the game and will hopefully start my own build of something new and exciting in coming months.
I eagerly await progress updates on this. :)
good luck!

I'M BACK! and the masks are done just in time for the auction!

After the primer I painted each one the color according to rank, which I mentioned above. I also added a little bit of weathering, but I am not too happy with it. After that I took some plastic paper sleeves, cut them up, and covered them with a sheet of car window tint stuff, and installed thee visors in the masks. Lastly I added elastic straps to hold them on your head. The only problem is that your nose presses right against the corner of the indentation from the inside and it really hurts... I might add some foam pieces to fix that. Overall I am satisfied with these. They aren't great and I made a lot of mistakes, but for my very first Bondo project I think I did pretty good.

When I start the My next mask which will be for my actual costume I am thinking about making resin casts of it so that I can make more for other costumes or put them out for others who want them.
I definitely feel more prepared for my next Bondo project. Can anybody recommend the best putty filler to use? I used nail hole spackling and it was a little to soft.
Anyway, I feel like conquering the galactic Republic now! See you guys on the front!

Tiny update. I haven't worked much on this build in a while. With school and everything I just haven't had the time for any of my projects. I haven't forgotten though. I'll be providing an update as soon as I can. I Will be starting by building a better faceplate with helmet and cowl. It will be a huge experiment for me so expect a lot of pictures of failed attempts. Stay tuned!

Another tiny update for everyone. I'll be finished with school in a couple weeks, and then I'll have much more free time to dedicate to my projects. I'll start working on this project in earnest, and will provide more progress updates as son as I can. I'm preparing for C2E2 coming up in two weeks, and I'll be donning my NCR Trooper kit with a few adjustments. Check out my NCR Trooper build to see the changes! Stay tuned!
