Kuhn Global Studio Scale Cylon Raider

I'm very encouraged by the success of this mounting system. It's good and strong and the epoxied nuts DO NOT GIVE. Once the threaded rod is inserted in both ends, the model is perfectly stable and the stand does not tip.

I really like the look of the Raider at 12" above the stand as opposed to 6. Makes it look more like the static museum-quality display that it is meant to be. Even at twice the height, the ship remains stable.

Testimony to the strength of the mounting system lies in the fact that the Raider mount holds even if the ship is inverted, although I don't recommend holding that position for long regardless of the robustness of the hardware.

The stand base is finished and it has 5 thick felt discs on the bottom to rest on.

The nuts have been successfully epoxied into both the base and the Raider.

The bottom plate is cyno'd and screwed and the mounting nut fits perfectly and flush. Red arrows show the brass screws.

HA.....it's got nuts. :lol

Kewl Bob. Unique idea.

Oh yeah. This Raider has nuts.

Some test pics...

And on the stand. I love the taller look myself:

I'm just about to shoot the initial primer coat this morning. Moving right along....

Remember also that this threaded rod will be clad with a polished steel outer sleeve.

It's going to really set this piece off, I assure you.

Indeed,.. the tall look is neat and unusual looking for this bird.

I need to consider possible case heights and will need to view this when complete. I may want to have it shortened by 1/4 it's current rod length in the end, but would like to see it displayed finished with the current height first.

Yes,.. you ARE moving right along. Impressive... MOST impressive. lol. :p

Well, at this height, your case will be fairly cubical. The height of the rod matches the depth of the raider, so the mathematical relationship is there. I can certainly cut it down if need be, but I think you'll like the height once the bird is complete.

I guestimate your case dimensions as roughly 20" wide by 18 to 20" tall by 15" deep...minus any plinth ( base ) that might be added.

Plus, consider that the taller rod height makes it easier to see the bird from all angles, including the underside. :D

Yup... THAT IS why I like the height idea so much. :D

nuts and a long rod....hmm...careful Kurt, people might think your compensating... :p

Threaded rod...for positive engagement when screwing. :confused :D

Yes....I know I'm skirting a fine line here... :love :thumbsup

Wings are in the first primer stage and second filling and sanding stage.

Main hull still in the initial filling and sanding stage.

After all the smoothouts, filling and blending is done, a flat black undercoat will be applied and then the base color.

LOLOLOLOL

:lol

Ahhh DUDE...

Made me laugh today...thanks Jess.

Bob. A fine line indeed. :lol

Looks great.

This was the SS pyro prop that I used to base my SS Raider paint job on, I wanted mine to look like a prop, not an idealized model.

I'd post pics of mine, but I don't want to hyjack your thread... Unless you want me to.. :D ;)

Lynn

Nah. I don't mind.

In case anyone is interested, Kurt requested that his be done up a bit on the 'idealized' side as I requested his interpretation based on the pyro model's look vs. idealized... However....just because I'm taking great care in filling voids and bubbles does NOT mean I won't be beating this thing up a bit. ;)

I have those reference photos as well.

Lynn. Go ahead and post yours. I don't mind seeing different approaches to a subject. I've seen what you can do with your MR Y-wing. ;)

Kewl.

Yup... as you say, I want the more "idealized" version. Not because of authenticity of the "pyro", but because there must have been a nicer, close-up shot "hero" SS used as well. I want the "hero" version, but done with the "pyro" casting since it is the only authentic cast available. It will still keep it's prop look value. This is another reason why I choose NOT to light any Fighters that are on my list.... for prop look value.

I would like to see more of your Raider as well Lynn. You're build-up and paint ability is AWESOME.. I am glad Bob said that you could post your Raider pics in this thread. Since you did base your Raider off the "pyro"paint scheme,... if anything,.. it will be a good comparison as to the differences between "pyro" paint ups and "hero" paint ups.

Are there any pic references of Raider "hero" models? Did the 'hero' Raider even exist?

Lynn will be back in good time to show off the kewl skills.

That gif just kills me. :lol

Caddyshack is one of THEE greatest comedies of all time...

Has somebody up in Props tackled Rodney Dangerfields' golf bag yet? Let's see it..complete with car stereo and beer tap. :D :D

Here's my theory about this Raider in a nutshell:

I'm taking my time and working the fine details, construction details and finishing details to MY satisfaction because...

1. Kurt wants it that way.

2. I don't want it to look like it's gonna fall apart with seams showing and such.

3. I don't want it TO fall apart. I just won't have that. I saw what happened to another commission some time ago because adequate precautions and care were not taken in its construction. No reinforcing metal pins were used on a butt-joint where they should have been... The result was an upset owner, an distraught spouse and a time-consuming do over. Because I'm so far away from Kurt's location, I can't afford a do-over. It MUST be built right. I'm on the clock. Anything less than my best effort and I'm only shooting myself in the foot. I'll darn well do it RIGHT or I just won't do it at all. And I will do it as the person who orders it from me wants it done.

Here you go.....

My modifed Jessie Viper with additional details and correct 1/24th Harrier pilot, I just can't bring myself to put in the Viper pilot, nothing wrong with it, I just don't like the looks of it in the SS ship.
[image]http://img.creamedgeezer.com/images/Viper.JPG[/image]

The Mongram Raider is here also as I concider it a SS model because it was featured in the TOS BSG "The Hand of God" episode in the Basestar hanger deck.

Lynn

Wonderful. :thumbsup

I knew about the Monogram being used in the Hand of God and I agree, it's technically a studio model as well.

I might just make my Monogram look like a pyro. I'm just not sure yet.

But your Raider and Viper are excellent. Thanks for posting those.
