Kurtz Dossier from Apocalypse Now (open source for all!)

They don't use the word River on any of those maps so it's defiantly added. The blue would be in the Dixon marker.

It's all blending in my mushed brain with all my Bathroom Buddy stuff.

The Dixon markers are the ones that unwrap, right? I will find them and play around to see how they look and post results.

I've looked through this thread countless times, and made an account specifically to check something;

There is an old mockup of the Kurtz Time cover going around in shockingly low quality (I think if you zoom into the price it turns into a blur of pixels)

But, at an original prop has just recently (as in, still up for sale at the time of writing) come out, and an auction website has posted some ultra-4k scans for the listing.

I just wanted to check that other people here know this exists!

I think under New Zealand law I'm fine posting their images here - but please take this down if I'm missing something (and I am going on the side of caution not linking to the well known auction site if that's a problem but one could say it's a Southern Bee)

I've uploaded the full spread here, but I also have a backup Imgur link - and of course, you can rip it from the site pretty easily.

This is my first post here and I hope works well, and can be helpful for someone!! (Also, I live in New Zealand, which I know has come up before!)

I've gone a little crazy looking at Time covers while buying a '68 Time Magazine, and noticed that all 'Portrait Covers' had a banner on one of the corners to provide some context on the subject.

So, while cleaning up the cover to prepare it for printing, I added an appropriate banner to justify why Kurtz is on the cover; he's written a featured article based on his 1965 paper on counter-insurgency that we see in the film.

While the original cover may have simply intended to quickly tell the audience that Kurtz is a well-known figure, I want my magazine to be slightly more realistic within the world of the film; included in the dossier because of Kurtz's article.

It took a good few hours to clean up the cover and get the banner in the right font/colour/size (as well as adding some noise to blend it seamlessly), but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I figured I may as well upload it here so it's not just trapped on my hard drive - and blog out my choices to justify my changes.

My main references:
TIME Magazine Cover: General Westmoreland - Feb. 19, 1965

Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing.

This project got set aside for me after I got dragged out of retirement, so I hope to get to it soon.

Thanks again.

Thanks Mate! Attached is a scan of the original July 1968 Cover and Back I bought off E-bay. Also attached is PDF of the inside cover perfectly sized to the original. Got to switch out the backs from that cigarette ad. That's what I did and I'll re-do now with the higher quality front from you. Then have it printed doubled sided and replace around the original magazine. It already came great but as you mentioned the fifty cents is blurry on the front. Did you dive into the Archangel Article yet?

Attached is cover spread I put together. It's perfectly sized to the original, just switch out the Cover. The original back is also better as the red colors don't fight each other. I'm going to redo-it on my photoshop file using the new front probably without the banner. I'll post a PDF of the completed Cover Sheet when I'm finished. Luckily I haven't stapled the print I had made to the original magazine yet.

Thanks for sharing the scan of the cover. Here's my take on replicating the cover with close-to-accurate fonts (Futura BT Heavy for the price tag and date, Optima Normal for COLONEL KURTZ and Gill Sans Nova Heavy for the text on the back). No font for the TIME logo, but found a vectorized file on Wikipedia which I had to further modify to match the scan. The images were slightly cleaned up, more exactly I removed some of the scratches and b/w dots:

Did the inside of the cover too with close-to-accurate fonts: for the Miller ad I used Americana Standard on the top left, Univers Next Pro Regular Italic for the text on the right, 3 different fonts for the hand written text (Berthold Script Medium, England Hand DB & Edwardian Script ITC Standard) and Univers Next Pro Medium Condensed for the text under the image. For the Old Forrester ad I used Times New Roman Bold for the small text and VnTimes18 Bold Italic (Hoefler Text Bold Italic for the apostrophe) for the big text on the top, and again Times New Roman Bold for the bigger text and Univers Next Pro Medium for the small text on the bottom. The images were slightly cleaned up and enhanced in Topaz Photo AI:

Finally received an original magazine in the mail, and got the cover back from the printers!

Upside, the print quality came out amazing, exactly how I wanted, and cost $3, only took about a month to format and size right in the end.
Downside, for some stupid reason they added a 1cm border to all sides and now the cover is too small, and that work sizing it was for nothing.

Well, live and learn; at least I can use the cover to get some practice weathering. The original cover (one of the attached photos) has completely fallen off, and is crumbling away - I won't go that far with the final one, but I'll definitely wack it against my desk to add some dings and dents, and rub some sandpaper on the edges to scuff and tear it up a bit so it's not mint.

Right now I'm just having fun practising techniques and trying to see how far I can push it
