So I'm going to be going to Indiana Pop Con as Nova.

I was wondering if I could get some tips, hints, advice on how to make eyes that light up for the helmet part.

Look into Glospex. Lots of us have used them for space marine helmets. They light up nicely, and you can still see through them very well. They are also easy to trim to size if needed. And they are pretty cheap too.

Also, Nova will be a sweet costume!

So there is a way you can see through? I built these a couple of years ago:

But annoyingly, you can't see through them. How does Gloespex work? Do you shine a light at one of the edges, and the material allows it to diffuse outthrough the front/back?

I sort of making illustration on glowing eyes setup for Iron man.
You can read it for the setup.
As in your case, I can think of two setup. One eye is completely blocked, and the other is see thru.
So you can only see thru one eye.

For a see thru eye, just use clear acrylic with LED on the side. You can add "strips", by scrape the acrylic surface (this method called ghosting?) to add more light on the clear surface.
For blocked eye, use white translucent acrylic.
