Mouth-safe clearcoat/sealer for friendly plastic dentures?

I've made some friendly plastic zombie teeth in the past and followed tutorials that had you mix food coloring into the plastic to color them. It also had you super glue the teeth to the gums though I'm not sure how safe that is either.


I'd like to paint a set with acrylic paint and seal it so it won't come off in my mouth, is there any product that would be okay to use?

I just watched another youtube video where the maker sealed his with 5 minute epoxy and said it would be perfectly safe after it's fully cured....this would be ideal but I'm having trouble finding any information that confirms he is right about that.

Super Glue?...Cyanoacrylate glue?. I don´t think so, it´s pretty aggressive. Please don´t try that. I´m aware it´s used in some surgery jobs and who knows, but I would avoid it in first instance. Imagine it goes the wrong way or something.
I don´t like the idea of painting anything that goes in my mouth with acrylic paint. The fact it´s acrylic does not mean it´s not toxic. And I can´t think of any sealant that is safe.
I recall some dyes called Minute Stain for acrylic monomer fake teeth (what they´re usually made of for fx by professionals). But don´t know if that would work for friendly plastic.
I´d go with the food colorants. Sounds safer.
Is friendly plastic safe for that by the way?.
One has to be careful with this kind of things. Because of toxicity, but also because of the shapes. If not made correctly it can hurt your mouth.
I hope someone who knows better about dental fx can say something. I´d wait ´till you know for sure from a good source.

Ok, some resins are food grade safe. BUT, after a correct postcuring. This means after they have liberated all solvent etc. This has to be made with an oven or letting it go by itself, and that will take time. And one has to know what he´s doing. So no, 5 min epoxy is no option for me.
Careful with you tube. For each one that knows what he is saying there are nine that talk crap and don´t. Specially with anything that can do with health.
I could be wrong but better stay safe.

I am a Dental Tech, the safest solution is take alginate casts then fabricate an Overdenture or Retainer as a base then sculpt onto these..
It's an Industry standard to do this.
Never use glue or other hazardous materials you may live to regret. I know a few professionals who will stand by this..
Undercuts are another issue but that's why we make casts first.

I could tell you a few horror stories including the guy who thought he could make fangs using off the shelf denture repair kit and had to have his mouth literally ground apart!

Thanks for the info. It's important that people know these things and to be aware that not everything one can see in You Tube is correct. I've also heard some horror stories with this and also with life casting.

Yes even though Ive worked 40 yrs with plaster of Paris ive seen the results of no prep on body casts.. vaseline and wax is a must, people forget just just you cant see it we are still covered in fine hair.
As others have said get advice from dentist, it also has legal issues here in the UK if you plan on taking imps of another persons mouth without the proper training.

Youtube is great but it needs more disclaimers, how often do you see people heating Cintra without a mask etc.

Some things you just cant take risks with and anything internal should be only dealt with by Specialists in the field.
Most polymers need to be cured in a pressure vessle or the monomer leaches and can cause all manner of issues in the mouth. Yes there are bench cure acrylics but used under controlled settings.

You could possibly use food-grade (non soluble) shellac? That's totally safe.

Just be careful to avoid the chemically treated, water soluble version!

Have you ever tried heating shellac soft enough to place in the mouth...it physically hurts your teeth!
We did it once at college when learning about Impression taking, it also then hardens into any undercut it may find.
Dentists stopped using it as it was liable to pull teeth out in Partial cases.
