So I started on a budget build of making a mouse droid for the premiere of Rogue One. A bunch of guys are bringing droids to the showing, and I figured I'd rather carry a dog sized bot around than haul an R2 unit around! I've always thought they were such fun little droids and wish they had more screen time. So who wouldn't want an actual working mouse droid?
I began with a new bright RC car that I bought at Walmart for around $30. A little pricey for what it was, but whatever. I stripped it down to just the frame and wheels.
Now heres where the budget comes in: acrylic and such are too expensive, and I'm a major chump when it comes to making it look good anyways, so I went the foam route. Sure it might not look as great, but eva foam is way easier for me to work with and way cheaper as well.
So I formed a base around the bottom of the car and worked my way up. Eventually I decided to use the two rims as a divider so that I would have access to a small speaker system inside.
After finishing the construction of the foam, only a semi crappy job, I moved on to filling the cracks with caulk and coating in modge podge.
Now the fun part: paint! I coated that thing in like 2 coats of primer and about 50 coats of flat black spray paint! Then I noticed something... early on a friend had drawn random crap all over the droid, and I let him knowing I would be painting anyways. But with the paint on you could still see the doodles! Sooo back to coating in modge podge and caulk to cover the marks. Then more paint.
Finally, I added some random pieces for the antenna bits at the top and some Lego side panels and the droid was complete!
Now, a question: I am planning on dressing up for the showing as some sort of imperial mouse droid someone to accompany my droid. I plan to integrate Mickey Mouse ears into the costume somehow, but what costume would go well with a mouse droid? I was thinking an imperial gunner might work well or even just an officer. Ideas?
