Re: National Treasure- Ocular Device/ 3D Glasses

just asking.
i have seen jewelers magnifying glasses that look a lot like these.
is there a change they are of the shelf items or perhaps pthe movable parts from the mag glasses could be used.

That seems like a possibility, as there are tiny metal protrusions on the bottom side of each, just like the lenses of the original. They look a little too perfectly attached, though. Maybe there's an earlier version of these which are attached less seamlessly, like the actual prop's lenses? Anyone know about these?

Re: National Treasure- Ocular Device/ 3D Glasses

i have seen these made on glasses with about 3 lenses mounted on one side , the glasses were just like those with the cutout top.
i dont remember if they were for jewelers or precision work like watchmaking.
i had thought how cool they looked then.
i am still looking for some listing.

Wow, I think you could be onto something there!

Maybe an older pair? I've been trying to get inside the original propmaker's head and so far we have two existing pairs of replica glasses that were Frankensteined together for the main body, so if the maker stayed constant with that thinking, I think there's a good chance those might be found parts too. :)

I still think the John Lennon glasses would be a cheaper alternative for our purposes but the one thing I'm worried about is their size- the colored lenses on the originals look pretty small compared to Cage's eyes and the main frames, and I'm wondering if we may have to look for kiddie size Lennon glasses.

Has anyone ordered their JAS Townsend glasses yet? We need to get a pair in hand to get measurements off of. I'm probably going to just pick mine up in person at Feast, but that's not for a couple more weeks yet.

Mods- Yes, this "is" a live auction, but the seller has these all the time and it would appear there's plenty for everyone. Hence, no bidding wars and no hard feelings between us all here.

They look perfect, and their only 8.99 a set! :D

Now we need red blue and green window tint!

Reaper57, Thanks for that earlier link! I'd have never thought of these without it!

Re: National Treasure- Ocular Device/ 3D Glasses

glad to help.
just one of those times when i knew i had seen something before. :lol
so you just need to get the glasses , drill two holes and replace the pin in the attachments with a long skinny {10/32 ?} allen screw.

Re: National Treasure- Ocular Device/ 3D Glasses

Excellent work SgtFang!!!!!! You really nailed it!!!! It's exact!!!!! And you never really got credit for IDing the glasses the first time around, so great job altogether. It seems close to done now. And thank you Reaper 57 for that extremely helpful hint.

Ok, what can we tint these lenses with? Stained glass paint would do it, but I think it would mess with the optical quality. (might as well try to keep it if we can:)) Can you boil glass in food coloring? I know it works for acrylic, never tried it w/ real glass.

they have that transpearent paint that you use on the glass suncatchers in the Walmart craft dept.

oops same thing. :rolleyes

Well, this specific auction is not really live anymore.

Anyway, I picked up my set!

So, tinting....

Heh! Was that you? I noticed somebody already swooped in and bought that particular set! :lol Here's another place with them too-

http://www.gsaenterprises.com/

Their pic on their site doesn't match the correct ones they had on eBay, but they say they try to keep them in stock. They're cheaper than the first link I posted, but you might want to send them a pic of the right ones when you order so there's no confusion.

Indeed it was. I bought two sets one from each vendor just in case I needed an extra set.

Great thread Sarge!

Cool, I ordered one of everything a few hours ago, so I can have all the stuff in-hand for measurements.

I'm thinking of doing the Mason brick sometime as a display base for them. Should I just whip one up out of clay when things settle down, or look into one of those places that make custom commemorative bricks with people's names on them?

I'm pretty sure you can tint white hydrocal with acrylic paint in the water so that it's "brick red" throughout.

Would someone mind grabbing two sets of the loupes for me? The EBay vendor doesn't ship international. I can pay or trade for a set of BTTF Doc's future glasses LOL

How about colored cellophane? Or maybe transparent vinyl, like those window cling decorations?
I know I've seen some sort of tinted transparent plastic cling film. Would be self adhesive and shouldn't affect the optics.

If such a thing exists.

Why not use acrylic sheet? Already colored like the stoner glasses that were popular in the 90's.

You can order a color chip sampler from them. All we would have to do is drimel them out or cut them out with a hole saw. it might look a little more professional than paint.

Re: National Treasure- Ocular Device/ 3D Glasses

I can custom make optical quality plastic (CR-39) lenses with the correct tint for this project but I don't have the equipment to run glass.

How much would you need per set?

Also, do they make that dippable window tint in primary colors?
