Exhibit A: The Movie Bike
Exhibit B: My Bike
I know there are a few people out there building an X1 Replica from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, (including me!) The saddlebags were particularly daunting for me, they require a lot of skill, time, and money to fabricate yourself, and so they're the last major piece of the puzzle for most of us builders. I've personally been working on my bike in my spare time for 3 years, and only now am I tackling the bags.
My saddlebags are based off of sculpts made by RPF member Abe Lugo, who made them based on screenshots, photographs of real screen used bikes, and measurements taken from one the movie bikes currently in a museum. I cleaned up and re-mastered these original sculpts, and molded them in silicone, with the idea being that I could make a set for myself, but also so I could help out other members with a reasonably priced option for saddlebags. (You don't want to know the time and money I have into this by now, and this is special pricing for RPF members only.) Besides, it gave me an excuse to play with silicone, which I've been wanting to do for awhile now.
The screen used saddlebags were vacuum formed plastic, but plastic doesn't stand the test of time. I'm making these saddlebags out of fiberglass for strength, lightness, and durability. If you want to know more about X1 building in general, check out the Pee-Wee thread.
Molds
Fiberglass Pulls
I'm making these available in 2 forms so that hopefully everyone can get something in their price range.
RAW KIT: 445.00+Shipping
Included: Raw castings of the left side bag, right side bag, upper bag, and lid for the upper bag. I'm also including 5 hinges, (2 for each side bag and one for the upper lid, plus screws.) The clear red acrylic fin for the upper bag is also included, (you will need to attach it yourself,) plus the latches that hold the flaps closed on the side bags. These will be raw fiberglass and will require body work for a nice finish. If you're no good with bondo and sandpaper and paint, then this isn't for you. Skill level high, this is a great kit for the do-it-your-selfer. These will require cutting and trimming to remove the fiberglass flash, and open up the door flaps. You will need to make a plywood base, and attach the hinges, latches, and fin.
CLEANED KIT 595.00+Shipping
Included: Left side, Right side, Upper. Flash trimmed, flaps cut open and all hinges installed. Plywood bases included but not installed. Light body work done and all parts primered. Also included but not installed are the transparent red acrylic fin and the latches. Personally I think this is the best option because it's a short way to the finish line from here. Maybe a little putty and paint and you're good to go. Moderate skill level, if you assembled and painted your bike yourself this should be no problem at all.
It takes about a full day to make one raw casting, a few more for the cleaned. If there is interest please reply here with which option you want. Payment is due up front, shipping payment will be actual shipping price and due when your piece is ready. Shipping is around 40 dollars due to the size of the box required, local pickup is an option as well. I'll make each set once payment is received.
