Rambo III oddities

I've got the flu and I'm really bored being on the computer but can't do much else.

I noticed this all a long time ago but was never bored enough to bring it up.

Rambo's boot knife:

He has two. He pulls one from his left boot being held on by straps on the boot. He does not recover it even though it looks like it he is actually grabbing the guys gun and never touches the actual guy.

Later in the cave he pulls one from his right boot. This one comes from inside the boot.

Both knives are identical and they ARE NOT the Gill Hibben boot knife that was licensed as the Rambo 3 boot knife. They are the Lile Mission dagger. You can't miss it and I think on the Blue Ray you might be able to make out the Lile stamp in one scene. I can almost see it on the regular. Since Lile did not work on the film that seems odd.

Also odd since he went for a new looking and style of big knife and although he has the Mission knife at the end of Rambo 2 he does not have the boot knife. He killed a guy with it in #2 and did not recover it. Side note he actually had a nylon sheath for the Mission Dagger in Rambo 2 even though Lile company sells it with a leather one as does the licensed one. You can see it in the prep scene.

Back to 3. While walking with his buddy after the big meeting, the scene where he meets the kid, after showing the kid his knife Stallone puts the knife in backwards where it remains for a bit more of a walk before they break scene and cut to another angle of them watching the horse/goat game. Actually that whole long walking scene was shot with the knife unstrapped and then as noted Stallone puts it back in the sheath backwards.

Like I said, really bored even though I have a million things to do I can't stand to well right now.

I need to watch this movie again. I have all four on BD and can't seem to get past FIRST BLOOD. I do like RAMBO though and want to see JOHN RAMBO (Stallone's cut?). The other two are just 1980's pop corn action flicks to me. Maybe I should go aand watch a movie and stop work on these damn shoes :unsure.

Actually, I want to watch R3 again to see if I can spot the serrated version of his knife. I read that they shot the scene with this knife before the Hibben design was finalized and decided that because the scene was dark, they would not re-shoot. Is this correct?

Yes it is and yes you can. They re-did some close ups from that scene but you only notice the original knife if you are really looking for it.

I think Rambo 2 is actually the best. It's not only a perfect follow up to First Blood but it is the quintessential, perfect action film. Start to finish. It has the emotion, amazing action, timing is perfect, just when you think it's over it goes in another direction. Plus it has one of the few great helicopter duals and the best, to this day, big knife ever made. Yeah, I said it. The Mission knife is the best and everything else is a distant second.

And although I like Rambo 3 and 4 I think having him go into a prison camp to rescue someone in 3 out of 4 movies is enough. I hope #5 goes in a different direction.

Cool, I will :)

Didn't Jame Cameron have a hand in the script? I like 2 more than 3 as well and probably why the last time I watched R3 was the day bought the BD set home - about 4 years ago :rolleyes

Tom

Yep noticed all this before. The other funny thing is that the knife Rambo throws in the Russian Comando's neck isnt a Hibben as mentioned. It looks like the Lile Mission dagger with the pommels paint worn down on it, probably to show the knife up more in that poorly lit scene..

The cut locker scene would kinda explain the Lile mission daggers pal, he obviously bought some more via mail order lol. I am glad that scene was cut, as it was fraught with continuity errors. I mean, where the heck did he get his medals, and class A uniform from, as well as his military issue locker? Considering all he had at the time of First Blood was a knife and sleeping bag and that was it, not even a tooth brush! Well unless it was stuffed down his sleeping bag. ;-)

I would like to think Rambo sold or traded his Mission knife at the end of part 2, as he had enough of violence for a while. he then forged the rambo 3 bowie from his own fair hands, that scene was cut too, which is a shame, as it would have explained where the knife came from.

Yes you are right, the mission dagger sheath in the movie was not leather, I have a magazine article showing a full clear pic of the sheath that went with the movie daggers if you would like to see it pal?

Yeah, that back to front blade just before the Afghan Buzkashi game is annoying lol I think Rambo 3 didnt do too badly for errors considering its changes in Directors half way through. I also liked the folly with the american flag sticker clearly visible on the Russian Hind chopper just before Rambo borrows it.

That is all great. The flag kills me.

I would love to see that Mission Dagger sheath pic.

That would help out greatly as I slowly collect stuff for my case.

Thanks

Tom, I'll dig it out for you. It came out of a German magazine (from back in the day) that an Austrian friend sent me a while back. :)

That would be great.

I'm going for as close to 100% accuracy on my next weapons case as I can. This will be the one I keep.

Obviously it won't have a Lile in it but I want every thing as accurate as possible. Probably no Omega wheels either.:cry

On Rambo 3 he should not have cut the knife making scene. It would explain why he has a new knife. For whatever reason, I like yours, he does not have his #2 and had to make a new one. It would also explain the more rugged look of the sheath.

Yeah the locker scene made no sense for many, many reasons. Glad it was cut.

Rambo #5 No camp rescue and a cool new knife. Although the Lile Sly II is my second favorite.

I wanted that one in the Junkyard sooo bad. I year ago I could have snagged it easy. A real Lile and my second favorite one as well.

This economy sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
