Rick Grimes S5 "red-handled" machete LOCATED / S2-4 Gerber knife CONFIRMED

File this under the "Damn, I'm good at this" column:

With the recent discovery of a 'so-close-to-accurate-it's-silly' Rick Grimes Season 4.5-5.5 'brown suede jacket with shearling collar' (Pic 1, below) at the thrift store yesterday (yes, I know... those chest pockets need to go...), I now wanted to "flesh out" the rest of the accouterments for that particular costume. Which, in all honesty, didn't leave much. I have pretty much all else, which has carried over from the previous incarnations of the character's look; costumes I've already build from Seasons 2-4. From the waist down; the pants, boots, gunbelt... all the same as before. As we all know, Rick's look took a change when the Claimers raided the house they were crashing in while Rick recovered from his injuries (Episode 4-11, "Claimed"); after they were routed from the Prison and his beating at the hands of the Governor.

The brown suede jacket (Pic 2) with the shearling (wooly) collar was taken from the Claimer he surprised and subsequently killed; leaving him as a 'zombie-bomb' for the other claimers to contend with. He has since, and now wears the jacket when necessary over what started as a plain white tee-shirt (undershirt?), which has since become a very dirty shirt, now more greyish-brown than anything.

Replicating that was easy, as I already had a well-stained tee from the Season 3-4.5 incarnations of the Rick-look. The recently found jacket... perfect. Like I said, not much else. But, in the watching of the show, and studying of new stills from the AMC show website, I couldn't help but notice that the now infamous "red-handled machete" that he promised to (and shortly thereafter, did) kill Gareth with, looked nothing like the Gerber Gator machete he had used in the previous seasons (to clear the prison of zombies with; split the skull of Tomas; etc...). So... I began to research what brand this new blade was.

I knew from the close-ups in the show that the 'red' in the handle wasn't the handle itself, but made so from colored tape wrapping it; one would assume for better grip for the wielder. After finding some decent close-ups from the show of the thing (which revealed some unique traits of this particular machete; Pics 3, 4), my Google image search for "machete" shortly revealed the answer to me. An answer that apparently, no one else in the costuming community had yet discovered; not even here on the revered chat-boards of the RPF!!

I discovered that unlike many other previous props from the show, this new blade was a very easy-to-get item, still stocked in fact, at a national hardware chain store. Harbor Freight carries it (Pic 5), and it is crazy-cheap too; currently on sale (seasonal) at a paltry $5.99!!

Regularly a mere $12.99. It even comes with the sheath that Rick uses to hang it from his gunbelt. Just need some red grip-tape, and you've got Rick's latest signature blade.

In the process of my search, I also stumbled across some images, definitively putting to rest the long-lingering question of which Gerber DMF Manual Folder knife he carried through seasons 2-4. The truth became known when I discovered two promo photos taken by Art Streiber for Entertainment Weekly (Pics 6 & 7). For the record: it's NOT the Tanto blade, but the standard DMF Manual Folder, with curved upper edge on the blade.

So, I guess it's now MY turn to share this information with you all here on the RPF, and become a 'hero' of sorts to you other guys like me who like to dress up and play the increasingly unhinged Rick Grimes. Just don't **** us off when ya see us wearing it.

UPDATE: After a couple of days, I decided to check out one of the two 'new-to-town' Harbor Freight stores (and of course, I picked the day where it was Winter Storming out...), and see if the machete I discovered as being the one currently 'featured' in the show was in stock. IT WAS, indeed, and at the $5.99 sale price, no less.

Upon getting it home, I am further convinced that it is the one wrapped in red grip-tape, and hanging from Rick's hip.

Here's some pix for comparison.

As can be seen in this BTS photo and my comparison shot, the machete even hangs at the right height on the belt, and facing the correct way, as that's the direction the sheath makes it sit within. The thickness of the handle features all match up perfectly, too. from the slightly thicker guard on the top edge of the handle, to the slightly longer, yet thinner lower-edge guard.

The final pic is what you're looking for, should you "Rick-rollers" on these boards be "on the hunt" (get it? The S5 tagline is "Hunt or be hunted"...) for one of your own. And at this price, you should be.

The knife is the DMF Auto.....you can see there are no thumbstuds on the blade. :)

I stand corrected! So much for my diligence in research... :p I was actually un-aware that there was an auto-version of the knife. Looking into it, I think I perhaps focused too much on the DMF as the "M" standing for "manual" and the "F" standing for "folder", and was unaware of the multiple versions of the DMF. But you have set me straight. And thankfully, before I invested in a Gerber.... (breathes sigh of relief).

Ooooh!!! I found ANOTHER pic on-line, showing the red machete at Rick's side (yes... this is kind of an obsessive thing with me...).

This pic, though a little bit hard to see, shows some of the black of the original handle peeking out from beneath the red grip-tape.

Haha, no problem. I'm kind of a knife geek, glad that could be of some help! :)

Get some red hockey tape, wrap it up and remember to dirty it up. Here's mine from this past weekend's Walker Stalker Con in NYNJ.

In the magazine covers he uses the auto version, but in the series (from scans) you can clearly see the studs, so the non auto is completely accurate.

Yup, yup!!! That's what I'm planning to do! Just haven't had the time to hit the sporting goods store...

So, how was "Walker Stalker"? I was originally supposed to go... Great pix, by the way. You must have more to share... Feel free. My thread, is yours.

THAT is the same image I had found on-line, which I was referencing to prove that the blade was not the Tanto blade, but the curved one. Not knowing that there was an auto-version, I had no reason to scrutinize whether the nubs were there on the blade or not. Happy to know that they are..!!

Thanks for the heads up on this! They were on sale here again so I picked up a couple. They made GREAT 'stocking-stuffers' for the walking dead fans in my family. Hell, even after I told them it was no big deal (just $6, some red tape and 30 seconds of prep) they all feel like they owe me better gifts next year.

Just so crazy the promo shot is using a different model knife than the show..... Not to derail the topic too much, but is it just me or does that Python look like an air soft model in the picture of Rick running in the first post?

Hi,
Just picked up my Rick Season 5 Machete from a local Harbor Freight store -- love it! Surprisingly quality item for such an astonishingly cheap price ($5.99). Thanks for the heads up!

Can you please tell me what type of red tape to purchase to wrap the handle? I see it comes in 'cloth' and regular electrical. It seems the one you used (and was used on the show) was electrical but wanted to make sure.

Thanks in advance.

Go with cloth. Makes more sense functionally.

With tomorrow night's Season Finale on tap, it was time to do some final prep for a night out amongst local fans, and convert my heretofore far-from-safe machete into a more crowd-and-costuming friendly prop. So I removed the blade, traced it to a semi-rigid material, and mounted into the hilt. That proved to still be too flexible, so I cut a piece of more rigid board material, and added that in as well. I taped the hilt with the proper red fabric tape, and dirtied it with coffe grounds... not dark enough... added some real dirt (last pic)... happy me. As the machete never really needs to leave the scabbard on the belt, the look of the blade wasn't important. The results are below.

I've been using the licensed foam Rick machete, but seeing the price and that you can remove the blade to make con sar by replacing with cardboard or whatnot has inspired me to go for as much accuracy on my Rick gear as possible. Thanks for the super informative and helpful post!
