Prototype 1 Video Clip:
This is also known as the "Science" or "Spock/Vulcan" scanner that can be seen in these episodes:
A private Little War (Vulcan Medical Scanner) (Used briefly at the beginning of the episode on Spock)
The Ultimate Computer (Sciences Scanner) (Used briefly near the middle of the episode to analyze the M9 equipment,
which is my favorite scene!)
I've created a research thread here:
Star Trek TOS Science Tricorder Scanner
I was watching the episode, "The Ultimate Computer" last night and noticed the "science" or "alternate" Tricorder scanner Dr. Daystrom was using. I have the Diamond Select version and I was surprised at how accurate the electronics are compared to the original prop. Since it's basically...

Special thanks goes out to jgk1701 for helping out with the initial project and parts research.
Latest update (10/12/24):
Machining has been completed and all of the scanners have been assembled.
I have spares available, so if you're interested in getting a scanner just me a pm.
Here's what is featured with the latest scanners: The total weight is now less than 2 ounces (1.9oz instead of 2.7oz). The LEDs I'm currently using have updated RGB technology displaying a total of 7 different color variations including purple. All colors flash quickly and then "pulse" randomly. All scanners include a free 3v cell battery already installed. All kits include a 3v cell battery, packaged separately. Battery specifications and replacement instructions are now included with all built scanners.
Updated Kit for 2024 (Includes everything pictured):
Note: The battery included with the kit/build up is a standard 3v, button, cell battery.
I'm using model CR2032/CR2025 which can be purchased at any Dollar store (2 for a $1!).
Battery Replacement: Pry off the end cap using your thumb nail, then pull out the battery holder.
The battery holder can be pulled about 1" to 2" from the inside of the tube for easy battery replacement. Picture of the battery holder pulled out:
My build thread:
Star Trek TOS Dr M'Benga Medical or Daystrom Science Scanner Build
After purchasing one of the Diamond Select Tricorders with science scanner a few years back, I thought it would be fun to try and machine a full-scale scanner. It turns out the Diamond Select version is slightly smaller than the original and it uses a standard RGB (Red/Green/Blue) color...
