Starkiller Flight Suit Costume, need some help planning

Hello All,
I've decided to take all the skills I've built over the years and finally taking the leap into a screen accurate costume. So I thought I'd try my hand at making Starkiller's outfit from when he's on Dagoba in Force Unleashed II. Whhhhhy nibble when you can bite off more than you can chew, right. And much to my surprise, it doesn't look like anyone's done this as far as I can tell searching both the RPF forums and google.

I have experience sewing, mold making, vacuforming, and probably all the metalwork background needed for this project. The single biggest problem I have is I have no idea how to approach this. I'm guessing I'll need to make a duct tape mannequin but I really have no idea how to approach this.

If anyone has any advice on how to think through this, I'm all ears.

Thanks!
Mike

Hmm...sounds like you have all the right skills. Have you tried searching the rpf for other star killer costume builds? Might be a good first step. Barring that, break down the costume into components and think about how to achieve each.

I took a look around but, of the other Starkiller builds, I didn't find anything in the area of concern. Let me see if I can better state my dilema. I'm not having trouble with the accessories so much as I am the garment. How to go about making the transition from screen grabs and sketches to patterns / pinning fabric. I've done quite a bit following patterns, but having never made patterns, my brain is freaking out without a good example to work from.

Unless my search terms are poor (which I don't doubt) I've found tons of threads showing people sewing things, but not much on here supporting this early phase.

Hate to be newb but like Donny, I'm out of my element. All help is much appreciated.

Well, there are a number of ways to approach this...you could find a close enough garment at a thrift store and split the seams to show you a pattern...trace yourself onto large paper and turn that into a pattern...then sew something in very cheap fabric to see how it works, and adjust until you get it right, then transfer to good material for your costume...and don't forget to pm those before you who have built the costume and ask them how they handled the fabric part. Best of luck!!

Hey if you order the mark ecko tie fighter jacket it could be a good base jacket for it. I have one and it's pretty well made

To expand on Mikers next logical step: find patterns of similar garments and use them as your base. Ebay is a great resource for out of print and cheap patterns.I'd use a black jumpsuit as a base and modify it. The jumpsuit doesn't have to function like the one in your reference photos (i.e. the unusual zipper placement around the upper torso) it just has to look like it.

That's an interesting idea. Unfortunately I've had to shelve this project for a while as some life events have taken priority this year. I appreciate the comments and will consider them when I can pick this back up (hopefully in a few months)

I ride Motos and that suit definitely looks like a riding suit. Then I realized it looks like a leather vest attached/sewn to a riding jacket a lot like mad Max's. That's where I'd start. Craigslist has a lot of Moro gear for cheap.
