Terminator 2 aspect ratio

Seeing a comparison between the Bluray 2.35:1 vs the Laserdisc 4:3 pan/scan version I started wondering why T2 has never been released in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1 instead, so you get the whole picture, as the 2.35:1 is clearly just the top and bottom trimned away from the 1.85:1 version.

It wouldn't be the whole picture though. It was shot on Super 35mm:

But... super 35... doesn't that work well for 1.85:1 aspect ratio?

I'd say it works well for all/any. Might be one reason why Cameron got hooked on Super 35.
