There's been this fad going about for a little while now, you may have heard of it... people rising from the dead and eating the living? What do they call it.... oh yeah. Zombies. Anyhow, there's this comic book based around what might happen after some sort of Zombie thing where most everyone dies. It's pretty cool, it's called The Walking Dead.
For whatever reason they decided to make a show about it and it's pretty obscure, nobody ever watches it or anything. And one of the character's on the show is played by Norman Reedus, he's not very memorable or anything so there's almost no fan presence and he's not recognizable or anything.
His character is Darryl, who rarely gets any screen time and never has lines or whatnot so nobody pays attention to him. Think Weirzbowski from Aliens and you've got him in a nutshell. Anyhow he's got a couple things that are briefly glimpsed whenever he manages to get on screen (a rarity, right? I know!) One is his crossbow.
The other is his knife.
I happen to own a website, BladeForums.com, which is pretty much the hub for knife discussion. One of the manufacturers on there is Busse Combat, the people who made the knife for Darryl's character. The specific model is the Team Gemini, and it's available in a ton of configurations. One day Jerry Busse gave me a call to discuss something regarding his forum and I mentioned that I'm a fan of the show and how cool it was that his knife made an appearance there. I'd already purchased a Team Gemini for myself, but a couple weeks later, this shows up to my shop:
The top one was my purchase, the bottom is a Light Brigade version configured the same way as the hero prop on The Walking Dead show.
Naturally I was blown away by this. Now I am trying to figure out the best way to display it.
I have some pallet wood sitting around that I salvaged for some reclaimed wood projects, so I sectioned off some pieces and positioned it to make a prototype frame:
No nails or screws yet until I figure out how I'm going to finish it.
I'm not quite happy with this yet. I want to keep it beat up and salvaged looking to capture the "apocalyptic" feel from the show, but at the same time I don't want someone reaching in and getting finger prints all over the knife (or worse, cutting themselves). I'm not sure if I want to keep the borders around it, or mount them on the rear and have it be like a plaque.
Here's the frame without the knife:
I'm thinking I'm going to laser engrave The Walking Dead logo into the wood
and possibly add some more touches to make it have a bit more character. Possibly a bloody handprint, maybe take a crossbow bolt and drill a hole through the wood and have the fletching sticking out like it's penetrated the finished piece. I'm not sure.
I may inlay some glass over the entire box and just laser engrave the logo onto it.
Anyhow, any feedback?
