Transforming Optimus Prime

This is shaping up to be the best G1 OP I've ever seen :)

There's a cool pepakura/papercraft 3D model of OPs head that I'm using. So many versions of his head throughout the years, it an be hard to choose which one I should be building.

Thanks everyone! I really appriciate the compliments. I'm not using any program as of yet since my current computer is so-so. But I am saving up for a really good one. I hope to win this costume contest coming up, cause then it'll be a sinch to get one. Anyway, I made So much progress the past week. Here you go!

20161005_133259.jpg I modified the head a bit more. Now I like it

20161009_154752[1].jpg Measured all the wood pieces from the cardboard patterns, cut, and glued them together. Knees built.

20161009_154812[1].jpg The mess that is the arms lol.

20161012_183856[1].jpg Had to recut and modify the arms, since somehow I measured incorrectly. But they still came out nicely

20161012_185452[1].jpg Legs assembled. Working on shins now to connect to feet

20161012_185533[1].jpg Foamed up the helmet brow, now just need to shape and sand down smooth

20161012_185636[1].jpg Up to date progress. Foam cutting starts tomorrow after shins are finished. Once foam is done, next will be the chest.

So much finished, and yet still a bit to do. 2 and half weeks left til costume contest. I have to make this happen and will. At least afterwards I can work on the transforming part.

Less than two weeks til the costume contest, and I'm all a frazzle lol. Getting as much done as possible. Here's what I have so far.

20161017_191230[2].jpg Cut and glued together some pieces on a ring. Then glued some brackets to hole it in place

20161017_191239[2].jpgAfter some sanding, it moves smoothly

20161017_191412[1].jpgShoulder now glued on

20161018_161218[1].jpg I guess simple is better? Good enough for tight times lol

20161018_170552[1].jpg Shin pads cut and glued

20161018_184403[1].jpg Knee padding added

20161018_203225[1].jpg Glue and parts Everywhere!

Major updates! I'm nearing completion of Optimus for the costume contest. As I mentioned before, he Doesn't transform yet. But after the contest is over, that will be his next phase. Enjoy the pics!

20161023_133647[1].jpg Calf section completed. I have a few ideas how to convert this to transform. Can't wait to start that!

20161023_133700[1].jpg I love the knee section. I added some little foam carvings to look like pistons on the knee

20161023_133714[1].jpg Lots of details and yet somehow it still works together

20161023_133727[1].jpg Legs side view. More than enough space for two tires

20161024_175312[1].jpg Such a simple idea, the cardboard fully covers the joint, the elbow is just elastic straps

20161024_175319[1].jpg I still can't believe I figured this out! Though I can't yet extend the arm completely, I have an idea during it rebuild to fix that

20161026_222314[1].jpg Cardboard chest piece done. Just left is foam layer needed then paint

20161026_222322[1].jpg Side view. Proportions came out nicely

20161026_222334[1].jpg Arms painted, just one more coat and protection layer left

20161026_222341[1].jpg The feet came out beautifully.

20161026_222631[1].jpg The legs! The most difficult part of the costume. Just the joints to fill in and they're done! I LOVE how they turned out

20161026_222637[1].jpg Legs front view

20161026_222652[1].jpg TIres painted, belt/waist is painted but needs some details

Only minor things left to finish by saturday. Lots of time lol. I'll have an update this weekend with the costume completed and put on.

Well I didn't win anything at the contest. Lost to a Perfection puzzle board. I didn't see it as a costume but more like a cart the guy pushed from the inside. Oh well, I'm starting reconstruction of optimus to transform. I can't wait! But here's a pic and a link to a video of what he looks like.

20161028_232932[1].jpg I was glad all these pieces worked together as smoothly as they did

20161029_201048[1].jpg You can easily tell the detail difference from the upper section and legs. I plan to rectify that

Here's the link to my webpage with me dancing as optimus and having a robot battle.

All and all the he held up pretty well. Lots needs to be done for him. The velcro on his chest and stomach parts started coming off, yet i thought the hip would crack and it is what actually held up better. Go figure lol. I will keep posting on his progress. I plan to have him fully finished by mid march at the latest.
