Will Star Trek ever make it back to TV and how would you pitch it?

A simple, but potentially costly, way of getting everybody's idea of a new Trek TV show would be to do a Starfleet Academy type show. Now I'm not talking about a show where we get to see cadets running around saving the day constantly or all sorts of teen drama but a show set at the Academy where each week would a history lesson played out on the holodeck. This way you could have episodes that deal with the forming of the Federation, the early days of the Federation, the years before and after TOS, etc. The cadet class could play the roles of the various "historical" characters of they could simply be just background characters with a rotating cast each episode or maybe just each season where each season focuses on a single time period.

That actually sounds both really interesting, and open to all kinds of narrative opportunities. I'd actually expect them to do something more akin to, say, what they do in the first season of Once Upon a Time, where you h ave, essentially, two parallel stories: one from the "real" world and one from the "fantasy" world. So, in this you could have one story about the cadets themselves (enter your teen drama stuff), and at the same time, have them acting through holodeck events or do flashbacks to particular stories. The show would likely be ensemble and guest-star heavy, which might lead to high production costs, but it'd offer a lot of freedom to the writers, I expect. Hell, if it was a hit, you could even use taht to transition to a later generation of Star Trek, say, after TNG, where the cadets finally get assigned to ships, and a new class comes in.

It would certainly be interesting to see the Star Trek universe from the perspective of those who are not onboard Starships. I remember playing "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" on my Mac and actually liking the idea of a group of cadets discussing Starfleet protocols, going through historical missions (Balance of Terror, The Wrath of Khan) and even solving a mystery here and there. That was nicely done.

If they focused more on acting ability instead of looks, they might have something.Like the new superman. If I ran into him on the street.I wouldn't recognize him.

Very simple and I don't even care which universe it takes place in anymore, I'm starving here.

Get Sci Fi writers or writers that at least understand what the Sci Fi genre is capable of and in addition...
actually understand the core principles of what Star TREK is about.

At this point, with the advancements we've made in the last 20 years with technology, the "Advanced 24th Century Tech" looks poor! Imagine the props we can make just by sticking a ipod touch in a cool scanner housing and call it a tricorder!

So, I think we should go to the 25th century and see what's out there!

I think they would be best off moving into a post TNG era, be free of any previous content and well clear of the current films.

I'll repeat my thoughts on a generational ship, it's not a five year mission. It's a never ending mission never to return home to take humanity as far as the universe is large.
The ultimate "trek".
OR
a "Captain April" era, the constitution class starships just being launched and their first adventures. Take the risk and go updated/retro. People can handle it.
OR
Another damn Animated Series! why has this not happened since the early seventies I have no idea. Make it semi-anthology, different starships (or starbases, or colonys) adventures every week, have a few different crews.. "out there". Mix it up
You start with the starship, that takes you to the starbase, from there you go to the colony, and so forth getting handed off from one set of storys to the next and you find yourself back with the first crew and rotate around again in some way. Even storys fully with alien crews. Lots of creative storys could come from this.

Like everything that sells T-Shirts, its gets beat to death until the last penny is squeezed out of it. Everything else after TOS is nothing more than character development night time soap opra dribble. I blame the fans for being so damn opinionated and putting up road blocks on what the characters could do and what the federation couldn't do, blah, blah, blah. This is the reason the episodes of TNG and everything that followed was a paint by numbers script that was too obvious to figure out within the first ten minutes. I really tried to like the show but it was stale from day one.

OK, that's what is wrong. Now what worked on TOS was first it was new and it had chemistry. Just like the Apollo space program, there was much to do with little time and little money. With these hurdles, men and women are capable of greatness. Give a person more time and a bigger budget and you get Star Trek the Motion Picture.

Now I have watched a few fan made TOS episodes on YouTube and they are spot on with the sets, costumes, props, etc but lets face it, the scripts and acting are fan based (nuff said). No I can do no better and I salute their efforts. At least it helped answer my own question of why don't they remake the 60's version of TOS complete with sets, costumes, etc. Now I know why, it's embarrassing! Especially when the wife catches me watching.

Here is the formula. It worked for most well made series in the 60's like TOS and Mission Impossible. Give me new interesting characters without trying to build a continuing back story because I simply want to relate to them as they make their way through the challenges of the episode. I don't want to know what their favorite color is or be their best friend! Star Trek is an adventure series with a Science Fiction backdrop. Start going on adventures and stop trying to be DUne with all the damn politics (nobody cares about the crap- we get enough of that here on Earth!) Its a big galaxy - go explore it!!!

If you want to see the roots of TOS watch The Cage Pilot. The transporter room scene where the landing party was gearing up to go down to the planet surface. The sound effect was amazing (thromb...thromb...thromb) like you sensed that what they were about to do takes an enormous amount of energy and was potentially dangerous. My point is that is an element of adventure! The music was also genius. Due to low budget they had to re-use much of a score from previous episodes however that worked in their favor because it automatically recalled an emotional response from the audience, perhaps unconsciously. Can you honestly recall what music was in the background during any other ST series / episode, TNG, DSN, Voyager...I doubt it.

I do like the idea of a complete series set in the mirror universe. I admit I enjoyed the Enterprise episode (Mirror Darkly I think it was).

Lastly, Red Shirt Academy is an idea I had when I was drunk. Kind of a dumber side of Trek where death and mayhem are a common theme (think Star Ship Troopers or RoboCop).
