X-Wing question!!!

So, there are two rods that run along the side X-wing canons and seem to go into the heat sinks. Do they curve down into the heat sinks or do they go straight into the heat sink ring?

On RED 3 they are not inserted to the ring, they are just touching it. I do not mean it as nitpicking. Just technical note from SS standpoint for the record.
