Female Captain America

Since my Iron Man project has been shelved due mostly to losing my work space, I've decided to take a new approach and make a female version of Captain America. I've seen it done before but for the most part they seem to go one of two ways, either the female part is a little too emphasized and the practicality and Cap's personality flies out the window (ie: exposed bellies, no sleeves, deep v-necks) or they are direct translations of the costumes out there so they're not really made with a female in mind. I wanted to do something that's both feminine and practical, it has been done before yes, and I love them, but they seem to be a minority.

So, to start out I mad a few (very quick, not-so-great) sketches to try and flush out my ideas and see if I could decide on a few things. I've narrowed it down to two possible ideas and i'm going to try and get to a fabric store sometime this week to see what I can find before I go for sure in either direction.
(And sorry about the huge pics)

The first one is kind of mix and match from a bunch of different Cap uniforms, obviously relying heavily on TFA but with the coloring of the comics. I love the way the TFA uniform looks but I feel like I wouldn't be able to do everything I'm hoping to and have it look that great with the fabric types needed for that look. I noticed in one of the screen shots of the USO shows in that movie that he's actually wearing blue opaque tights/leggings with some blue shorts over them so I decided to add a short little flowy skirt, which I think add some obvious femininity to it. I also moved from the drop holster to a thigh holster both to accomodate for the skirt and because for some reason I see it as something more often utilized by women. I took the shoulder straps from the TFA suit (which I think I would continue in to the 'Y' shape on the back) but used the more traditional strip look for the abdominal area and made the pouches on the belt a little smaller than most seem to be, though I'm still thinking I may change that. I also borrowed the red gloves from the comics but kept the combat-type boots, mostly because I think it will be easier to get a good looking set of military boots than some bright red fold overs.

The other is quite obviously modled after the Commander uniform, which seems to be where they're headed for TWS. It's less iconically "Captain America" since well, technically he wasn't at the time, but I freakin love the uniform, particularly the leatherwork and the boots. This one is a little more directly pulled from the original uniform though I did add the skirt of course. This one is a lot longer and has a slimmer line than the first but in order to make moving/(theoretically) fighting easier it would be paneled in the front, specifically, the front on either side-where the red and white stripes are-would be cut all the way up with the panel between them extending under so when standing it would be complete coverage but when I moved my legs it would open up and allow for pretty much any movement. And again, there would be opaque leggings underneath, probably made from the same fabric as the rest of the uniform. I also moved the red/white striping up from the legs and put it to the waist, made it wider. I thought this would accentuate the whole 'hourglass' thing and would balance things out with the skirt some. The other real major changer too was to add te white undershirt/shorter sleeved. There's less justification here, I just thought it would look good to break up the blue a little more. My brother could also get me some of the military issue black and grey flag shoulder patches that were in the recent concept art that's been posted for the new movie which might look cool in place of the stars on the shoulder.

Either way I'm probably going to use some kind of heavyweight fabric with a little bit of stretch to it, similar to stretch denim maybe. I thought about trying to add the 'scales' in the more traditional uniforms but it seems like they just wouldn't sit right in reality, especially on a girl.
I'm still going back and forth on the cowl, I really hate wearing things like that but I realize it's definitely an iconic part of Cap, though he does seem to lose it pretty much all the time. Though I've thought that if I do decide to go without I will do some wing hair clips and put one on either side to at least hint at it.
And of course I would have a shield, at this point I'm looking at aluminum but may have to go with a steel saucer depending on where my budget goes.

Ugh, too many words. Hoping to get to the fabric store soon to look at options and get started on something tangible to show. I'd love any input on anything here, especially if there's any criticisms/things you think I could change to make them work better.

Not too many words.

Both ideas look great. I would love to see both if time and budget support the effort.
Plus, believe that you can never have too much Captain America.

For the shield, the air soft is nice. I have made both the steel and the air soft. General Frosty and Chris Fields have done great work with the aluminum shields. If I can't get and EFX that will be the next project.

Looks great so far. If you're interested, Marvel does have a female version of Captain America. Her name is American Dream, and she doesn't wear a revealing costume.

I was aware of her and like I said, it has been done a few times both by artists and some costumers, but I wanted something more along the lines of the movie costumes where they're a bit more practical in a realistic sense and I know for myself at least, skintight lycra/spandex which is what would most look like American Dream's costume, would not go well, so I went with something a little different.
I am thinking about, if I decide to do a cowl, adopting her style there, where it sits a little higher on her head in the back than most Cap ones do, it seems like it would better with longer hair.

I'd love to make both but it would probably end up lying with the budget, though I'm definitely keeping the sketches on hand and will probably end up with both of them at some point :lol

As far as the shield goes I'm kind of leaning toward the airsoft now that you mentioned it. General Frosty and Chris Fields' blanks are a little more than I can spend at the moment so I was just going to go with a flat aluminum blank and paint it like one of the steel ones. I'd love to go the sled method but I just don't have the tools/workshop to cut the rim off or drill the center hole. But I love that the airsoft ones have the shapes molded in, much easier to mask and paint that way!

Love the second one. Can't wait to see progress :D

I'm definitely leaning toward the second one at this point, I just love the tactical feel of it, and if it does end up being the one they base the new movie suit off of it'll be awesome to have on hand.

I love both designs! I will be watching this thread with great interest to see how it goes. Good luck! :)

Budget is what always gets me. The lack there of and then busting what little it was.
If you want togo the airsoft route the almost movie version is toward the end of my C.A. build. It was done with a drill, file, hobby knife, sandpaper, and a hot glue gun.

I'll definitely have to look in to that...if I can find one that is, they don't seem to be selling them anymore so I'll have to troll around ebay a bit.

Wow both sketches are amazing! If you could somehow blend both together...its tuff enough to make one costume . You managed to keep both looks feminine while keeping with an official Captain look!!

By the way what did you use crayon? NIce skills with the coloring!

Haha, nah, it was colored pencils but the paper had a little bit of texture to it so it definitely came out looking a bit crayon :p

I did think about trying to combine elements of both of them but I think at this point I'd rather pick one and then save the other for another year or something. It may get a little bit overcomplicated and 'too much' if I try and put them together, I'm not that good!

Well your drawing skills say your that good. Yeah there both great why mess them up! They both look like they were done by someone working for Marvel studios. Cant wait to see the costume!

My vote would be for the first one, the second looks more like a flight attendant than a kick-ass army heroine. But that is just my opinion and I'm sure either one you do will look great in the end.

Tough decision, the first has and original feel as the 2nd is more like the movie. Though call both look great :)

Hit it right on the nose with my major dilemma! I think I will definitely end up making both at some point, depending on how much work I get this year it could possibly be both for NYCC, but that's definitely wishful thinking.

As far as which comes first, I've been looking around to see what I can salvage from around my closet and because of this I think I'm going to go with the second one. I found my brother's old military-issue book camp boots and because I have huge feet they're my size. They're a little beat up but I think if I clean them up and give them a good polish I can make them look right for the black boot under the shield guard. I'll just have to make sure not to tell anybody they're from the Marines ;) I talked to him too and he's got an extra set of black and silver flag patches he's gonna bring home on his next leave should I go for that look.

I also have a pair of opaque navy leggings that I think would work, as long as I can find a good fabric that's close in color. I also have a red pair so I may try them both out and see which I like better.

Hoping to get out to the fabric store to see what I can find and good will to see if I can find any leather I can salvage for the pouches.

The second one will be perfect as the new movie Winter Soldier seems to be goin with this design for Cap's costume....
I could do with one of those air soft shields myself actually
