Watching the film today, brought up a question.

Dr. Floyd meets the Russian scientists in the space station, has the uncomfortable talk about the goings on at Clavius Base, then gets up and leaves.

Dr. Smyslov then makes some comment in Russian.

What does he say?

"In Soviet Russia, the space station runs 'round you!"

And here I thought he just was wondering where the vodka was for all these years.

You're far from the only one who did not know. In the Swedish subtitles on my VHS tape (I haven't got BluRay yet), "bush baby" has been translated into "negro doll" ... :rolleyes

Btw check this recent thread about cut scenes. Apparently, there was a scene where the bush baby was ordered from Macy's (!) over video-phone.

I tell you what DOES bother me about "2001"... the fact that the Discovery astronauts have a habit of putting on their spacesuits in times of potential danger (for instance repair EVAs) but they leave their helmets, gloves and oxygen backpacks in storage down in the pod bay!

I realize that this is a major plot point in the film, but it's just stupid. :lol

Also, consider this: HAL's mind works extremely fast. HAL reads Bowman's and Poole's lips in the pod when they discuss how to disconnect him. At some point, Bowman and Poole have to get out of the pod.

How come HAL doesn't strike at THAT moment and just blow them both out into space by opening the pod bay doors? :lol

My friend first thought they said "Look at this buns! He must be working out!" but, I had my contacts at the Russian Embassy translate. Hope this helps!

Which suggests the subject of the Russians' concern had less to do with Floyd than with the crew of the Russian rocket bus.

In the context of the film in its mid-Sixties Cold War era, it always seemed to me like the "rocket bus that was denied permission to land at Clavius" was probably a Soviet ruse to get somebody into Clavius to see what was going on in there.

Given that scenario, Smyslov is probably showing sympathy for the Americans and their "epidemic-ridden" base.
