Akira (2021)

Amen, brother!

How long before we have to say things like "no, I meant the Harrison Ford Bladerunner, not the Shia LaBoeuf Bladerunner"?

Oh good god no! I just can't see the transformer guy, No! Far better actors out there. Water sprayed on him or not. No! I'm sorry no! This hurt me just a little.

Just leave poor Akira alone. It is soooo Japanese that an Americanization would gut the feeling of it.

Of course, thousands of Akira fans will go see the movie and then complain bitterly; but their money will still go to the producers. Sad, really.

I agree Anime is way japanese. Honestly I really can't see this movie being any good. It probably be some thing like transformers, they call them transformers but they are not truly transformers.

Bike probably end up looking like one of the tron bikes, they just end up painting it red and all CG. Or looking some thing like this. I can also hear them say "the Anime future is dated. We need to give it a change."

This is a film Ridley Scott should take on, This movie is so His style. All settings of blade runner are so similar to Akira. Just Imagen if he took on this film be so epic.

And lets not forget that the Director is going to be a Hardcore fan "I will stay true to the anime".....and then it goes down hill from there.

Ah, I see I'm still traumatizing people with that one. Nice! Go me. :lol

That's very much the point: it's such an innately pointless thing to do that it's perfectly Hollywood. The pitch meeting might have gone like this:

Pitcher: We remake Akira! In live action! With Garret Hedlund as Kaneda. And - this is the bit - we set it in a postapocalyptic version of New York, with all American characters - but we keep the Japanese name!!!

Suits: mutter mutter brand recognition mutter mutter genius mutter mutter green light.

Of course, thousands of Akira fans will go see the movie and then complain bitterly; but their money will still go to the producers. Sad, really.

Well they'll have only themselves to blame if they do.

I hope he doesn't. The more he tries that, the worse it will be.

Just heard About this and that it will be shot in Canada.

Akira = Japanese movie made by Americans in Canada! :confused

This just cant be good. Not to mention Live Action. Plus Dicaprio is rumored to be producing it. Lets just hope if this is true he does not put himself into the movie. Ghack!!! :sick

The live-action take on Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga moving forward, Akira may have found its Kei. Twitch reports that The Twilight Saga star Kristen Stewart has been offered to play the female lead.

Stewart joins a bevy of talent said to be up for roles, including Garrett Hedlund in the leading role of Kaneda, Gary Oldman as the Colonel and both Helena Bonham Carter and Keira Knightley for undisclosed roles (Potentially Knightley could be up for Kei as well).

This movie doesn't stand a chance at being anything memorable simply because it's being pieced together with bits of the Manga and the Movie. There's nothing "unglamorous" in the entire script. And now with Kirsten (Twilight) Stewart in the part of Kei - expect that character to grow dominate the story more than ever.

You all must have missed the announcement. Kirsten Stewart from the Twilight movies has been cast as the Kei in this version.

IT'S GOING TO BE EPICALLY SO TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!

Making a live action Akira would be like making a live action Watchmen. Why bother? It gets the dress dirty and annoys the pig.

Aw, but if you use enough lipstick you almost forget it's a pig! :lol

Before the torrent of outrage gets going can I point out there's an update on the link saying the rumour has been denied.

100% agree with your novel idea, though. That would kick all kinds of ass. Why does Hollywood think we have an insatiable appetite for bastardised material? (rhetorical question, no need to answer that.)

haha hollywood, good idea? this is hollywood were talking about right? when do good ideas ever get to hollywood? they usually get stabbed and left for dead in the gutter with their wallets stripped the second they get into LA

so they are getting an unknown director to direct the movie right?... an unknown..? for akira?.. uhm.. this director will probably have a huge chip on his shoulder and want to 'redefine' the movie.. 'make his mark' on the story..

which by the way, the original movie is a seriously clipped short story compared to the manga (which i encourage everyone to read, because its pretty much a japanese watchmen in terms of quality)
