Amen, brother!
How long before we have to say things like "no, I meant the Harrison Ford Bladerunner, not the Shia LaBoeuf Bladerunner"?
Just leave poor Akira alone. It is soooo Japanese that an Americanization would gut the feeling of it.
Of course, thousands of Akira fans will go see the movie and then complain bitterly; but their money will still go to the producers. Sad, really.

I agree Anime is way japanese. Honestly I really can't see this movie being any good. It probably be some thing like transformers, they call them transformers but they are not truly transformers.
Bike probably end up looking like one of the tron bikes, they just end up painting it red and all CG. Or looking some thing like this. I can also hear them say "the Anime future is dated. We need to give it a change."
Oh good god no! I just can't see the transformer guy, No! Far better actors out there. Water sprayed on him or not. No! I'm sorry no! This hurt me just a little.

And lets not forget that the Director is going to be a Hardcore fan "I will stay true to the anime".....and then it goes down
hill from there.

Aw, but if you use enough lipstick you almost forget it's a pig! :lolLarry Young said:Making a live action Akira would be like making a live action Watchmen. Why bother? It gets the dress dirty and annoys the pig.
You all must have missed the announcement. Kirsten Stewart from the Twilight movies has been cast as the Kei in this version.
IT'S GOING TO BE EPICALLY SO TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!
Helena Bonham Carter certainly was attractive in PLANET OF THE APES.
Before the torrent of outrage gets going can I point out there's an update on the link saying the rumour has been denied.
100% agree with your novel idea, though. That would kick all kinds of ass. Why does Hollywood think we have an insatiable appetite for bastardised material? (rhetorical question, no need to answer that.)
