ALIEN 1979 SELF DESTRUCT UNIT

Thanks...it's a chrome plating service. I posted details earlier in this thread

So, managed to grab a bit of time to continue this project. I have all the elements finished now...just the melon twisting job of getting it all to move and work correctly

So i have but just one question

How much would it take for you to build another one of these? I would absolutely geek out just seeing this in person let alone with all the mechanics done

Most of you know me for making Star Wars props but I do have another love...Yep, ALIEN. First time I saw the original 79' film I was stunned...never seen anything like it before or since. I went to see it about 15 times in the first few weeks of release, even though I wasn't quite old enough to get in, and have seen it probably a hundred more times... It is a genuine masterpiece and I love it more than ever
Anyhoo...I was thinking to model, and build, some of my favourite props from the film and top of the list has to be the Self Destruct unit from the Nostromo. I know of a coupla build threads on here but all the pics/links are dead and I've had no luck chasing down refs/info. I am hoping this thread will make it easier for members to chip in with any details/images as the build proceeds
This will be a back burner type build as I have my hands full with the 1/6 Falcon at present. First priority is to get everything modelled, then figure out the correct scale. Probably I will 3D print hardly anything on this prop but I want to have it all drawn out for proportions etc. I'm thinking to have as much CNC'd (in Aluminium and Brass) as possible, and fabricate the main components from laser cut Acrylic/MDF etc. I do want it to be a working prop, so all the movements, sound effects need to be factored in before tackling the build.

Here's what I have so far; The box, tubes, rods etc are all drawn as separate models

And here they are as a single unit

Umm. This is truly phenomenal work and I bow down to your incredible skills.
I'm not sure if I've seen all the pictures on the thread, but I just recreated the graphics for the panel in deeply researched detail. All the hand rendered typography with it's odd kerning, word spacing and individual character width percentages.
I love that the graphic is all weird, wonky and somehow not immediately obviously kind of bad.

I've also found that two companies are mentioned in the graphics.
1. “Surrey Electro-Materials Ltd”, which is now a division of NewMet Ltd.
2. “Wescorp”, which still exists with the same name but a different logo.

Well anyway, here you go if you're interested:

I just bought this CGTrader model of the self-destruct box, but most of my time so far has been involved in converting and resizing the .stl files over to .fbx since I don't plan on printing the model, just rendering it and sending it to ArtStation.

I too have a copy of these files (but won't get round to printing them for some time); Cold Canuck - just checking, are you saying that the models are incorrectly sized (and if yes, is that in relation to each other, or to 'life-size', or both), OR just that they required resizing as part of your specific ArtStation project?

I found that so many of the models that are created and sold, are most often huge file sizes that can slow down my apps such as my D5 render apps and/or file format convertors. Apps such as SketchUp do a pretty good job of eliminating unnecessary geometry, but strangely, the better programs such as Blender, MAYA, etc. they all introduce unneeded geometry, I'm sure it's to make some elements smoother, but the file sizes can often double or triple. The image down below, is just a little over 320 KB, but if I was to use the native file format from Blender, the file size would likely be on the order of 5-7 MB, and while that isn't too stressful, imagine ten or fifteen similar-sized models that are needed to make a diorama.
