Any one else bulking up/changing how they look for halloween?

I'm attempting to lose weight for any of my ideas. I'm overweight, but not fat, but I'm still aiming towards ideas that would fit my stocky build such as a werewolf, Beast from X-men, or even Penguin just in case.

Looch, no problem, and I don't want anyone to feel criticized. The worst thing that can happen to someone who is trying to lose weight or get more fit is to become discouraged, and this almost always happens because they are given bad information which doesn't pertain to them or their goals. So say for instance that they look up the "Daniel Craig workout" or look up some weight loss advice and they try it. It doesn't work for them and then they think "Oh, I have bad genetics" or some other thing and they give up. But it's not to do with their genetics or inability to put effort in, it's that it wasn't advice they should have followed. I've seen many people make HUGE differences once they get good info (myself included, many years ago) so it's a bit of a personal mission of mine to try to help as many people as possible but making sure they don't give up for the wrong reasons.

I've had friends tell me they would start trying to guess my Halloween costume for the year based on how long my hair was and what sort of facial hair I was sporting.

Two years ago I went for the full beard and left the hair long enough for an EPIII inspired Ob-Wan that worked out really well.

Last year I had cut my hair real short and had to let it grow out a bit for Tony Stark.

This year I've been doing the Insanity workout trying to slim down a bit for Captain America. I'm planning an amalgamation type costume with elements from the classic, Ultimate, and First Avenger costume, and so I'm hoping that some quilting and padding in the costume will help to offset my own natural "padding".

ya im thinkin of doin some body reformation for costumes i'm going to use in the future. I read in a bodybuilding forum that there is a basic balance between building muscle and losing fat. you need to be in a negative calorie state to lose fat, and a positive calorie state to gain muscle.

this means if your core caloric intake is 2000, you should be consuming less than 2000 to lose, and more than 2000 to gain mass. its near impossible (or just really hard and time consuming) to attempt both at once.

There is truth to some of what is in your first paragraph. Simply stated, your BMR (metabolism) is how many calories your body burns at rest. If you increase your caloric intake by 3500 calories above your BMR, you will gain 1 pound. It can be a pound of fat or muscle or a combination of the two, depending on the type of calories consumed and your body's specific macronutrient requirements at that time. In other words, if you are performing intense anaerobic exercise such as weight-lifting, sprinting, etc..., your body will require more protein, and will utilize the extra calories derived from protein sources to build lean muscle mass.

Keep in mind that excess protein will be stored as fat if your body doesn't require the extra calories. When you workout, you create a catabolic state in which your muscles have been depleted of glycogen and saturated with lactic acid and cortisol. By consuming a high protein shake or meal after you workout, you provide the essential amino acids necessary for your muscles to repair themselves and grow. The additional benefit of having increased lean muscle mass is that your BMR (metabolism) is increased. That means you will burn more calories at rest than someone who weighs the same, but has less muscle.

I am trying to lose fat and retain lean muscle, so I am consuming 15 calories per pound of lean bodyweight (I'm 6'3" and 255lb). That gives me 3250 calories per day to consume. We all know now that you should spread the calories out during the day to increase utilization of the food. Because I am trying to retain as much muscle mass as possible, I get at least 300 grams of protein per day, spread out over 6 or 7 small "meals".

Only for the last few years have I considered myself a bit "chunky." Most of my life i was very thin. But recently, (Im 30 now) my matabolism has slowed and Ive gradually gained weight. Im at about 170 now, I think. Ideally Id like to be around 150. I had set a goal for myself to be in shape for the summer ren faire season, but that didnt really work out. Mostly because I just didnt really do anything to help myself. I did, however, try to watch what I ate, and I think I may have dropped a few lbs here or there, but my goal was definitly not reached.

I have now set a new goal for myself for halloween. I know that I probably wont see any huge results by then, but its good to have a goal, right? I have a great Wolverine/Logan costume that would look even better if my face thinned out a little or if I could diminish my belly a bit.

My main problem is motivation. I know that I want to look better, but when actually faced with the decision of Workout vs. Be lazy, Lazy tends to win, and I put it off. There really is no reason why I shouldnt work out, I live in a condo building with its own equipped fitness room. Its all there, I just choose not to allocate my time to it.

Im glad I found this thread with others who have similar Superhero workout goals. Ive enjoyed some of the other's stories, and Flasheart has been very knowlegable and helpful. Im gonna do everything I can to dedicate myself to some kind of aerobic workout at least twice a week. I think that something like the treadmill or bike would be best for me, but I dont know for sure. Any help or advice is welcome and appreciated.

Hopefully, by Halloween Ill have some pictures that Id be proud enough of to post up.

Yeah I've been slimming down since May, wasn't as fit a Batman as I wanted to be last year. Lost 25 lbs and now trying to build some muscle. I recommend doing total body training each session, focusing on compound exercises (sorry, no arm curls). Lift big and fast to get big, fast!

I have gained 20 pounds of muscle over the past year and a half, most of my costumes have suffered from this. I can no longer wear my Boba Fett correctly, it looks horrible as the chest sticks the armor out to far, the forearms do not fit right. I'd have to make a new one from scratch. I tried wearing it a few months back. Very uncomfortable.

whilst not specifically for halloween i'm attempting to get down to 1977 George Lucas levels of slimness....I have the hair already (due to not getting it cut in a year) and all i would need then is a flannel shirt, some jeans and some old glasses....

if i can't lose the middle as much as planned I just go with post weightloss Peter Jackson

I'm about 170lbs now (down from 246 2 year ago) and am looking to be down to 160 before the year is through at least...

I'm currently working on Thor and doing some serious bulking. Hittig the gym pretty hard and eating loads. The increased intake in calories is actually harder than the gym, lol.

Been really sticking at my new routine and it is working. I've already gained more than a stone in the past 12 weeks, bringing me just over 13stone and I hope to be up to 14 by Christmas.

My target weight overall is 16 stone which should be a good weight at 6'4.

Its also coming in very handy for rugby :thumbsup

YES. Finally cleared for light gym duty after shoulder surgery. So for halloween I'll be very slightly less scrawny and tired.

Gonna be focusing on legs, core and back for a while, then slowly spreading as my shoulder can handle more. My goal is rock-climbing/low-end-parkour range by 2013. I figure a year and a half to two years is a good period of time to advance without risking further injury. And my improved posture and awareness should keep me safer.

Man I miss my highschool body. :(

Don't you find that unit of measurement a bit limited? It doesn't seem very accurate. How are dumbells labeled there? Or for that matter, food?

Yeah its limited, its just a post though very basically outlining what I'm doing. I'm not gonna go into any high amounts of detail about things as you've most probably already read something similar in the past 3 pages.

To answer you questions

Dummies are labeled in KG and food is labeled at too high a bloody price at the moment :p
