thanks to you guys for sharing the loads of info. this is definitely going in my list of things to put together in the near future.

I made the originals, all three of them if memory serves. Also made the warning science content sign. it's all 1/8" mild steel plate.
Plasma cut (or acetylene) and then welded all around, then hammered to ****, and then artificially rusted (for the first run, real rust comes pretty quick) with acid and then ground with an angle grinder.

I'd post pix but I won't be back at the shop for a couple weeks. I will post then (with tape measure).
If anyone does a run I want one.
ARE YOU ACTUALLY ADAM SAVAGE? Like tall dark and disfigured, I am also a huge fan of your show. A while back I sent you guys a thing to sign in the mail. (Feburary) I never got it back. :cry So I had to send a new one a couple days back. Thanks 4 making such an awesome show! I hope some day I can meet u guys. P.S. I sent you 2 myths. You probably havent read the email yet, but uhhh, yeah. It's how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop and sulphur hexaflouride in footballs (instead of helium) Again thanks and bye. I'll also be making a metal sign. :) Bye!

I cut some foam core into a rectangle about 4" x 10" I wrote out (with a carpenter's pencil) how I wanted the lettering to look and took a hot glue gun to it to make the texture pop out from the foam core. After that I painted the whole thing. It took about 3 hours with drying time. I can put up pix later. :)

P.S. The colors I used for this project were: (For the "cleaner" rust) More orange than light brown, (For the burnt rust) The same, but then I spackled some black with the brush, (For the metal lettering) I used more white than black because I didn't have silver. I advise using silver, because my metal lettering and edges didn't look as realistic as I had hoped.

So I've been a fan of the show for YEARS! Probably seen all of the episodes a few times over but lately I've been on a real Mythbusters kick.

That brings me to the reason for the post. Has anyone made anything from the show?

If you've seen the show for years, then did you notice they say, "Don't try this at home?" J/K :D

I am also looking to re-create this Mythbusters sign as the centerpiece of my Man-Cave/Garage.

I am the Nobbiest of Noobies and I'd like some guidance on how to create the prop using actual steel.

Adam Savage posted that he used 1/8" steel and there is a link to discovery.com that has photos of how they cut the letters out of a large sheet.

So the cutting/welding of the sign seems pretty straight forward. But I am hoping that Adam or someone else here can post ways to create the rusting of the sign.

I'm guessing he rusted the sign as a whole (w/letters attached) and then used a grinder to clean off the lettering.

Also after completion, what should one apply to the letters to ensure that they do not rust on their own.

And Adam, if you help me with this, I'll be happy to make one for you. (As long as you autograph the one I make for myself)
