Brandon Lee, 18 years on...

The only thing Brandon had going for him was his last name & martial art's. His acting was sub-par. Just about in every interview I saw him do brought up the fact that Bruce was his dad. Would he of been noticed had his last name been Smith otherwise.

Its not about the acting, its the martial arts expertise, the fact the Lee name is a royalty in the genre and there was much pressure to keep it going. This is why Shannon was thrust into the spot light. Now a days martial arts are common in American film. Then not so much. In fact, it was relegated mainly to B-movies before and during that time. The fact Brandon crossed over to main stream US cinema is an achievement all its own.

His acting was sub-par.

He was 28. Many actors are no good at that age. And being Bruces son held him back in many ways. People wanted him to be SuperKungFuGuy2. But he did a great job in The Crow.

Shannon should stay far away from Kung Fu movies. Her dad and brother died filming them.

Such a loss.

I don't see how Linda and Shannon cope.

My Uncle lost his entire family. His teenage daughter killed herself, his wife had a heart attack on the highway, his son had a heart attack while drunk, and his other son fell out of a moving vehicle. His new girlfriends' son committed suicide at 50.

Wow, that really sucks for your uncle, but you should bear in mind that everyone copes in different ways. Clearly, if your uncle is still doing well in his life, he's a really strong guy. Not everyone grieves in the same way.

I had planned on re-watching The Crow soon... might as well make an event out of it. Here's to 18 years that could have been great. :cheers

RIP.

Cant blame the prop master as that person is not the weapons handler. On top of that, you have no idea how difficult it is to keep actors from playing with guns on set. You literally have to stand 1" off camera and be ready to pounce with some of these actors. Check into his death and how the on set manufacture of blank rounds and a non blocked barrel live fire pistol are at fault. I forget at the moment if it was a primer but an object lodged into the barrel from a prior scene, gun was not checked when it was unloaded nor when it was reloaded. On top of that, the 1st AD should check as well.

Ok. technically it was the assistant prop master. He was handed the job when the production company sent the weapons master home early one night.
As for the blank round manufacture, that occurred a few weeks prior on a different scene, one that required dummy bullets to be made. Real ones were used and they pulled them out of the shells and dumped out the powder and then glued them back in place, forgetting all about the primers still being live. Sometime between then and the fatal night, the trigger was pulled, dislodging a bullet from its shell and sticking it midway down the barrel. On the fatal night, the barrel was not checked (on multiple instances) and when the full load blank was fired, it propelled the stuck bullet out of the barrel and into Brandon, eventually lodging in his spine. He was pronounced dead 13 hours later.

sorry to threadjack, but what is the name of the song hes playing in the movie, ie the guitar solo. was that on any album? that song always makes me sad.

Well it's not quite 19 years, but I just managed to grab something I've been after for a long time. This is the Japanese collectors box dvd. It's really nice, I don't know why they never did anything like this in the west. Maybe they should for the 20th anniversary.

He had real screen presence, and I think that, with the Crow, would've been able to shed the "only an action movie guy" image, if he'd wanted to. Probably would've improved his craft, too.

It's a shame that we'll never know, though.

I remember how excited I was when Rapid Fire came out. Though he would have been very different from Bruce, he would have been a success in many ways for many years.
