Re: Another R2-D2 build

All the blue panels are now on the dome

Still waiting on the Holoprojectors to be sent and I can finally finish the dome .

Legs have been ordered and are sitting in customs in the UK at the moment.

Also, tried weathering on a couple of scrap parts, I need a bit more practice and to look at a few more tutorials :(

Re: Another R2-D2 build

I don't know how I could have missed this beautiful WIP thread, that is definitely one of my future projects after finishing 1:1 Vader and H.I.C.

Great job so far!!:thumbsup

Regards,

Alberto

Thanks :)

Not much progress this week but the postman brought me some nice wooden legs, so I need to buy some more wood glue and paint :D

Re: Another R2-D2 build

I have been working on the legs over the last couple of weeks
Test fitting on R2

This is how the bolts connect through the shoulder hubs into the body (shoulder hubs will be covered in aluminium tape)

Re: Another R2-D2 build

Horseshoes test fit

After wood filler, primer and a lot of elbow grease I painted one leg

Just waiting on Skirt, Holoprojectors and feet, I can see light at the end of the tunnel!

Re: Building R2-D2

Aluminium utility arms now fitted, I decided in the end to make these static, I just could not get them to open correctly without the fear of damaging the skins

R2 - Legless

Re: Building R2-D2

I'm in the same boat. Doing an all aluminum build and have been collecting parts for 3 years now. I have pretty much everything, but have been dragging my feet on starting the build because I'm afraid of messing something up. I need to get cracking, though because I want to be able to take him to Celebration VII next year.

Tell me about it :lol

If I knew how many challenges that you have to try and resolve every time you add something to him and how many times I have nearly screwed up, I may never have started.

Also, there are sooo many intricate parts on him, I have had to learn woodwork, metalwork, painting plus about another 20 different new skills

Good luck on the Alu droid :D

Great build so far. It's looking absolutely brilliant.

The problem with the Utility arms not clearing the skins is a common one. It requires an angle to be filed or machined on the claw part of the utility arms to clear the skins. One of the last runs of utility arms on the R2 Builders club actually had this modification done when they were machined. For those interested, there are threads and pictures over on Astromech.net.

Re: Building R2-D2

i think i started collecting the bits 12 years ago, its got a plastic frame, can't remember the maker, fiberglass feet and skirt, the rest alu.

i'm scared to add up the cost.
i know if i started him it would take months to assemble. months i can't afford.

keep up the good work, it will be worth it in the end.
