Can we keep the Junkyard somewhat on topic?

i guess im not really seeing the problem because, looking right now, everything there looks pretty valid to me...

Only thing annoying that I see is having several FS threads from the same seller filling up a whole page. Why not just do one post with all your stuff for sale?

Categorising the Junkyard

Can it be split into sub headings like Star Wars, Star Trek, etc? It saves having to wave through pages and pages of stuff to find the morsels. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I think that's a great idea. There's so much traffic in the junkyard that it causes a lot of unnecessary "bumps" just to keep something on the first page for half a day sometimes. Dividing it up into categories would prevent a lot of that and increase visibility for everyone's items. It would also prevent having to scan through many things a person has no interest in, and sometimes things just move down the page so fast I've missed them entirely.

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

Actually, I would figure out the top 4 categories of items listed and make a sub forum specificly for them to reduce the load on the main junkyard forum. I think many more categories than that could be counter-productive.

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

Obviously you don't want to go mad with categories but even basic ones like Trek, Star Wars, Galactica, Alien, Brit Sci Fi and Other would be a start. Sellers find buyers interested in their particular wares more easily and as you pointed out, the item stays on a front page longer. Everyone's a winner.

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

I think it would be better and easier as others have suggested in the past to just have 2 categories;

prob related

non prop related

simple as that :thumbsup

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

I disagree with different sub-forums. Quite often I'll be wading through and something (that I wouldn't ordinarily be looking for) catches my eye. Deal done. If it's in a forum I wouldn't normally scan, it'll make this process that much harder and could cost members some sales in the long run. :)

I go both ways on it, and have displayed mine individually and together. When they are individual , it makes more sense for people to judge interest as well as for some sales items not to be unintentionally missed because of peoples posts...

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

i think its too hard to categorize, many people sell totally unrelated stuff (trek, aleins, star wars) in the same thread...i think getting people to better TITLE the sales may be a more usefull solution (but thats up to members to do)...and frankly, that goes for ALL threads ,some titles are terrible and dont help a prospective reader out at all...

Sub forums would be perfect. I dunno what though. Maybe...Props for one Toys , games & dvd's, Kits, another for Collectibles and maybe a misc section for things like books and magazines. I think some of those headings could help. Also a wanted to buy or looking for sub section.

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

Sometimes the threads are hard to wade through. I think that doing something to organize the Junkyard in some manner would be beneficial to everyone.

But, exactly HOW I don't know....

But I LOVE the idea of having Star Trek, Aliens, Star Wars, and then maybe a "Everything else" or "Garage Sale" section for many different items.

The Junkyard can be a bit much at times.....

That sounds too (A.S.A.P.) to me.

Oritz hit the nail on the head.

Also, this forum is more about building rather than selling, sure, with a good build comes an interest thread and potential run. But the RPF is more about showcasing and admiration of others talent, not to generate sales.

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

I'd still be happy to see prop and non prop sections, sections by film would be overkill i think but 2 sections would be good or just stop all the non prop sales.
It's actually important for a lot of people to generate sales to cover costs of producing something for themselves or to fund the next project, so to say sales are secondry is wrong.
We wouldn't see a lot of the cool projects undertaken by people here without sales.

Re: Categorising the Junkyard

I'd like to see a two-way separation between people selling stuff and people auctioning stuff.

I hate nothing more than clicking on a "FS" thread to find a link to an auction :angry

You Know, I never even considered that at all. Wow, great great point you made.

Makes me rethink my idea completely......
