CC Klingon D-7

I've been trying to decide what paint job to use. It's known that the model had a violet color on top. However, we never really saw that side in the series. Also, this violet color looks kinda silly to me. Right now, I'm leaning towards some overall grey.

I'll release this as CC licensed for the good of the community. :D

EDIT: This color scheme is now obsolete; see later posts for the corrected diagram. This color scheme is more representative of the model's condition before being repainted allover gray by Ed Miarecki, and I do not believe it represents the model's condition at the time of filming the original series.

You know what's funny about the paint scheme of the D-7? If you watch the animated series you can see the different tones. If you know anything about the animated series, Filmation was given color info by Roddenberry and Richard Arnold a long with a LOT of creative in put.
I would say Karl did a bang up job on the paining schematic!

After continued analysis of photos of the two-toned "AMT Prototype" version of the ship, and study of the ship as it appears in the episode "Elaan of Troyius", I am coming around to the opinion that the actual filming miniature was ALSO painted in the two "light" colors just like the AMT prototype!

Wow Karl, excellent research! Thanks for sharing that with the board.

If you increase the contrast, then bring the gamma down on that frame grab you took you will see that model is painted with the three tones. Only the AMT panograph model was painted two tone. Confirm with that 4-16 picture again. There were a couple more taken at the same time of the filming minature that shows the three colors in their true glory.

Aside from the color differences, there is one easy way to distinguish the two models. There is a silver grill texture detail on the sides of the aft ends of the engines.
nac1.jpg

The filming model has this grill detail represented as two rows of three raised strips.

nac2.jpg

The AMT model has it represented as a shallow half round shape with scribed lines that intersect a raised rib.

Filming model - three colors,
Tooling model - two colors.

If the filming model IS three tones, two of those tones are the same as on the AMT Prototype.

So the question then becomes, what is the third color and where is it used?

That's right. Let Sasser teach you some more! :D

I'll give you this one:

The matching colors on both models appear to be the same. Two of the colors on the filming version are the same color with different tonal values. You remember tonal values? Art class, first semester? :cool If you mix those Testors Model Master paints (and I know you will!) please let me know how they turn out. I threw that diagram together at the last minute and guesstimated the color mixes from pics.

Yeah, that looks like what I had originally in my first drawing... the "dark" tricolor scheme. The condition the model was in, in that photo where it's in the shipping crate with the top deck of the command module broken off.

I did some new screengrabs, so this from "Elaan of Troyius" is a bit cleaner, but not by much.

The effects footage from TOS always looks like it was stored at the bottom of a garbage can along with the coffee grounds and egg shells. :lol

These colors match the AMT Prototype perfectly (except for the lighest shade, which was used on the boom and ball of the filming miniature but which is missing on the AMT version).

Is that AMT prototype still on dispaly anywhere? IF it is perhaps we can make some closer observations of it...

The AMT Proto was sold at auction... it's in private hands now, right? I don't think it ended up at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle but I could be wrong I suppose...

Of course the Filming Miniature is in Smithsonian's collection, I don't know if it's on display right now or not.

When I was there last year I didn't see it anywhere.

OK I redrew some parts to be more precise, and I took Sasser at his word when he says the color placements are accurate in HIS drawing... so this is my current best guess at what the filming miniature must have looked like. :)

I got the D-7 and BOP today.

I've posted this in both threads.
The timing couldn't have been better.

Scott did a hell of a job. The registration marks make this an almost foolproof assembly.
